New Barbie Dolls Feature Vitiligo and Hairless Models to Promote Diversity

Barbie is known for getting makeovers, but this new update is the best one yet because it involves inclusivity!

The maker of barbie dolls, Mattel announced this new design on Tuesday with more skin tones, more body types, and more unique looks!  The Barbie Fashionistas line, which was introduced in 2016 now features dolls with alopecia, vitiligo, and a boy with long hair.

In the past Barbie has been criticized for unrealistic and European standards of beauty. The company said in a statement that the brand wants to show “a multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion.”

Since 2015, the Barbie Fashionistas line has added more than 170 “diverse dolls.”  In 2017, the company introduced the first Barbie to wear a hijab.  Last year the Fashionistas line offered a variety of looks, including a doll with natural hair, prosthetic leg, in a wheelchair, and more attainable body types.

Barbie hopes that this new line will help children see themselves in the toys that they play with.
