Janelle Monáe Comes Out as Non-Binary in Twitter Posts

Artist Janelle Monáe is known for her uniqueness not only in her art, but also in her ability to embrace who she is.  Monáe   breaks barriers in fashion, music, art, and now is continuing to positively use her platform.

In a recent tweet she wrote, “#IAmNonBinary, “as a retweet of a post that said: “There is absolutely nothing better than living outside the gender binary.”

To be non-binary means they don’t define their gender as being “male” or “female.” They may define their gender as being somewhere between “male” or “female” or may identify differently, according to GLAAD.

This isn’t the first time Janelle has proudly claimed her identity, as in 2018 she publicly came out as pansexual, which GLAAD defines as “being attracted to all gender identities, or attracted to people regardless of gender.”

Since this reveal fans have praised her for her openness and bringing awareness to gender/sexuality issues.

Monáe’s most recent project was her supporting role in Harriet and stars in upcoming film Antebellum.
