Eastern New York Correctional Inmates Beat Harvard University Debate Team

The correction institution invited the prestigious school to a debate. Let’s just say, they gave Harvard a run for their money.

The Bard Prison Initiative is a program brought to Eastern New York Correctional as a way to continue educational growth within the prison. (It also supports 300 other students in New York.) The team asked the Harvard College Debating Union to battle them in discussing whether “Public schools in the United States should have the ability to deny enrollment to undocumented students.”

This isn’t the first time the correctional inmates beat another school’s debate team. They have won against Univeristy of Vermont and may have a growing rivalry with the U.S. Military Academy in West Point.

Great work is being shown, especially following President Obama’s documentary on the prison system.Congratulations, Eastern New York Correctional Facility!

Visit The Wall Street Journal for more details on how the event went.
