Civil Verzuz: GIRLFRIENDS vs LIVING SINGLE
Something magical happens when 4 black women come together on the big or small screen. In the ’90s, we were blessed with Living Single and at the turn of the century, we were given the gift that keeps on giving, Girlfriends. As far as films we cannot forget cult classics like Set It Off and Waiting To Exhale.
Streaming services like Netflix and Hulu have thankfully brought back these gems from mere obscurity for a new generation to discover as others take a walk down memory lane.
Living Single was undoubtedly the groundbreaking sitcom that followed four black women coming of age in their mid-twenties while living in Brooklyn. This sitcom gave black women the license to discuss topics from sexuality, career, and the occasional quick wit jokes.
Girlfriends on the other hand [based in LA] gave a deeper insight into the dynamic relationship between four women who were polar opposites but shared a somewhat solid bond. The creative minds behind these characters chose strategically how to structure the ensemble cast from skin tone, beauty, racial makeup, and class. As a viewer, it was evident the complexity of blackness was placed in the forefront in a bold and fresh way.
Although these two shows are so different we couldn’t help but find some similarities. Both shows had characters who were workaholics, bougie, and even a little touched.
With VERZUZTV being such a phenom during this pandemic its only right we have our own between these two influential shows amongst the casts.
