Congratulations to F. Gary Gray for being the top grossing African American director.
Straight Outta Compton reigned in an amazing estimated $157.5 million. The U.S. and Canada couldn’t get enough of the N.W.A biopic that took movie theaters everywhere by storm.
Gray’s keen eye for a quality production is what made the film so powerful for fans to enjoy. The hardworking director of past films like Friday and Set It Off, explained to Vice how vital it was to channel the true story of the gangster rap group.
“That was important to me. I want you to get to know the guys behind the tracks, behind the lyrics and beats, and get a sense of them as human beings. That’s what makes this special, because you can’t just google ‘N.W.A.’ and get these details.”
Happy to hear the great news, F. Gary. Can’t wait to see what comes of Last Friday.
