Steph & Ayesha Curry Foundation Launches Scholarship Program For Girls

By Posted on 0 2 m read

The Steph & Ayesha Curry Family Foundation has launched an annual scholarship for college-bound female students from the Bay Area who are interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.

The idea of the scholarship was inspired by 9-year-old Riley Morrison, who wrote a letter to Steph Curry expressing her frustration with the lack of sneakers in the girls section of the Under Armour website. Not only did the Golden State Warriors point guard send Morrison two pairs of Curry sneakers, but the two also collaborated on a special purple colorway version of the Curry 6 sneakers, which was introduced in honor of International Women’s Day. Because Curry didn’t feel comfortable profiting off of Riley’s shoe design, he decided that the profits will fund a scholarship.

“The Steph & Ayesha Curry Family Foundation is funding an annual scholarship that’s given to a college-bound female student from the Bay Area who has shown an aptitude for overcoming adversity, catalyzing change within her community and demonstrating excellence in a STEM-related field of study,” according to the foundation. “The $30,000 scholarship, whose first recipient will be announced at tonight’s Golden State Warriors game, is paid over two years and requires the recipient to take two or more STEM-related classes each semester while maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA.”

During the Golden State Warriors’ Friday night (March 8) game against the Denver Nuggets, the first recipient of the scholarship was announced. Vivian Wu is a senior at Oakland Tech, has a 4.2 GPA, and has completed over 300 hours of community service as an advocate for marginalized communities, including survivors of domestic violence.

Steph Curry Commits To Inclusivity of Women In Sneaker Culture After Letter From 9-Year-Old Fan

By Posted on 53 3 m read

Steph Curry has made a commitment to be inclusive of women in the sneaker culture following a letter written by a 9-year-old fan. Riley Morrison expressed her frustration to the Golden State Warriors’ point guard regarding the lack of Curry 5 sneakers in the “Girls” section of the Under Armour website.

Dear Steph Curry,

My name is Riley (just like your daughter). I’m 9-years-old from Napa, California. I am a big fan of yours. I enjoy going to Warriors games with my dad. I asked my dad to buy me the new Curry 5’s, because I’m starting a new basketball season. My dad and I visited the Under Armour website and were disappointed to see that there were no Curry 5’s for sale under the Girls section. However, they did have them for sale under the boys section, even to customize. I know you support girl athletes because you have two daughters and you host an all girls basketball camp. I hope you can work with Under Armour to change this because girls want to rock the Curry 5’s too.

In his response to Riley, Steph Curry mentioned that he’d spent the last couple of days speaking with Under Armour about how they can correct the issue.

“I appreciate your concern and have spent the last couple of days talking to Under Armour about how we can fix the issue,” Curry writes. “Unfortunately, we have labeled smaller sizes as “boys” on the website. We are correcting this now! I want to make sure you can wear my kicks proudly – so I am going to send you a pair of Curry 5’s now and you’ll be one of the first kids to get the Curry 6.”

Steph followed through with his promise to the 9-year-old basketball player as the video below shows her opening the Curry 5 and Curry 6 sneakers on Christmas morning. In his letter to Riley, Curry also revealed that “something special” is in the works for International Women’s Day on March 8th.

BET caught up with the NBA star, who spoke on how he found out about Riley’s letter and why it was important to him to address her concerns.

“I woke up on a random Tuesday and got about 10 to 12 text messages from family and friends who had saw the letter on social media cause I hadn’t seen it on Twitter,” he said. “And they were making sure that I was aware and read the letter about her experience trying to find he Curry 5’s. I wanted to respond immediately, because I felt a certain type of way and was disappointed and knew I had to address it, but what I didn’t want to do was over promise and under deliver in terms of what we could do about the issue, so I called my team that afternoon and was like, ‘What can we do about this?’”

He continued:

“We called Under Armour and the team internally there to figure out what we could actually do to make a difference for the girls in Riley’s situation who were going onto the website and looking in the Girls section and can’t find the product. It took two days to really plan out how we could address it, and once we realized what we could do about it, since she put a lot of time in writing that letter to me, I wanted to write her one back. So I did it on the bus to Toronto when we played the Raptors to make sure she knew that we were taking this serious and that she should expect some kicks coming her way for making us better and helping us out with something we needed to address.”

For the Curry 6’s “Christmas in the Town” colorway kicks, Steph enlisted the help of youth from Oakland-based Fly Boys Couture Club (FBCC) Kids, a class dedicated to teaching children aspiring to join the world of sneaker fashion and design. As a man of his word, the Curry 6’s are now sold in the “Girls” section of the Under Armour website but are SOLD OUT. You will also find the Curry 5’s.

Be on the lookout for Steph Curry’s Fox Theater ($130) sneaker dropping Jan 4th on Underarmour.com.

Viola Davis & Stephen Curry To Executive Produce Charleston Church Shooting Documentary

Actress Viola Davis and star athlete Stephen Curry are set to executive produce Emanuel, an upcoming documentary surrounding the shooting death of nine African Americans at a Charleston, South Carolina church.

On June 17, 2015, 21-year-old white supremacist Dylann Roof entered the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina where he opened fire on several innocent men and women, killing nine. Last year, Roof was sentenced to death for the crime.

Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media and Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions will partner with the city of Charleston and those affected by the tragedy. The film will feature exclusive interviews with survivors and the families of those who lost their lives.

“The documentary highlights how a horrible tragedy can bring a community together and spreads an important message about the power of forgiveness,” Curry said in a statement. “Stories like this are the reason we created Unanimous and entered the entertainment space. I hope the film inspires others like it does me.”

The Charleston massacre affected men and women of all races across the country. It goes to show that despite how far we’ve come, we still have a very long way to go.

“June 17, 2015 served as a stark reminder of the power of racism,” Viola Davis and Julius Tennon of JuVee Productions added. “We, along with the country, grieved each family’s loss. Yet, miraculously, from this devastation, we witnessed tremendous benchmarks of humanity. The survivors found the courage to love in the face of hate.”

Emanuel will premiere at DOC NYC on Nov. 14 and 15.
