John Legend Shares Why He Participated In The ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ Documentary

By Posted on 60 2 m read

Since the premiere of Lifetime’s ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ documentary, we’ve seen a number of celebrities speak out against the singer-songwriter and Chicago native via social media and news outlets. Some have even made the conscious decision to remove their R. Kelly collaborations from streaming platforms. However, there were several celebrities who reportedly declined to appear in the Lifetime documentary for unknown reasons. One celebrity in particular, however, decided to make an appearance and lend his voice to the victims of abuse.

John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen appeared on Bravo’s ‘Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen’ and revealed why he decided to speak out in the ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ docuseries after a caller requested to know what he thought of other celebrities declining to participate.

“I don’t want to cast any aspersions on people because everyone has their own reasons for not doing something,” he said. “I get asked to be on documentaries all the time. It’s not because I don’t agree with the premise of the documentary that I don’t do it, but there are all kinds of reasons you don’t do it.”

John revealed that he is friends with both the director of the ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ documentary and those who were a part of the Mute R. Kelly movement.

“The reason why I did it is, I’m friends with the director Dream Hampton,” Legend continued. “She’s awesome we worked together on ending mass incarceration and I respect her work. Another reason is that I have good friends that were a part of the Mute R. Kelly movement. They were literally marching on the streets and they work with rape victims in Chicago. I knew that as a celebrity that I could lend my voice to these people who have been hurt.”

Jada Pinkett Smith To Discuss ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ In Two-Part ‘Red Table Talk’ Special

By Posted on 152 1 m read

If you were tuned into Lifetime’s ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ documentary last week, then you heard the jaw-dropping stories told by young women, their parents, and former employees, who have experienced or witnessed sexual, mental, and physical abuse at the hands of the self-proclaimed Pied Piper. It has sparked a much-needed conversation amongst the black community regarding not only mental health but the lack of concern and compassion for black girls who have fallen victim to abuse.

Jada Pinkett Smith is looking to continue that conversation with a very special two-part episode of her Facebook Watch series ‘Red Table Talk’, which will focus on the documentary. Jada, her daughter Willow, and mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris will be joined by survivor Lisa Van Allen and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Chicago School of Medicine, Dr. Candice Norcott. The women will discuss the public’s reaction, warning signs of abuse we all should know, survivor stories, and different paths to healing.

The episodes will air Friday (Jan. 11) and Monday (Jan. 14). Each episode will be available on the ‘Red Table Talk’ show page at 9:00 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. ET.

It’s Time To #MuteRKelly

To Our Fellow Women of Color:

We see you. We hear you. Because we are you.

For too long, our community has ignored our pain. The pain we bear is a burden that too many women of color have had to bear for centuries. The wounds run deep.

As women of color within Time’s Up, we recognize that we have a responsibility to help right this wrong. We intend to shine a bright light on our WOC sisters in need. It is our hope that we will never feel ignored or silenced ever again.

The recent court decision against Bill Cosby is one step toward addressing these ills, but it is just a start. We call on people everywhere to join with us to insist on a world in which women of all kinds can pursue their dreams free from sexual assault, abuse and predatory behavior.

To this end, today we join an existing online campaign called #MuteRKelly.

Over the past 25 years, the man known publicly as R. Kelly has sold 60 million albums, toured the globe repeatedly and accumulated hundreds of millions of plays on radio and streaming services.

During this time, he also …

  • Married a girl under 18 years of age;
  • Was sued by at least four women for sexual misconduct, statutory rape, aggravated assault, unlawful restraint and furnishing illegal drugs to a minor;
  • Was indicted on 21 counts of child pornography;
  • Has faced allegations of sexual abuse and imprisonment of women under threats of violence and familial harm;

Together, we call on the following corporations and venues with ties to R. Kelly to join us and insist on safety and dignity for women of all kinds:

  • RCA Records: the venerable music label currently produces and distributes R. Kelly’s music;
  • Ticketmaster: the popular ticketing system is currently issuing tickets for R. Kelly’s show May 11;
  • Spotify and Apple Music: the popular streaming platforms currently monetizing R. Kelly’s music;
  • Greensboro Coliseum Complex: the North Carolina venue is currently hosting an R. Kelly concert May 11.

The scars of history make certain that we are not interested in persecuting anyone without just cause. With that said, we demand appropriate investigations and inquiries into the allegations of R. Kelly’s abuse made by women of color and their families for over two decades now. And we declare with great vigilance and a united voice to anyone who wants to silence us: Their time is up.

Together, We Are Strong,

Behind The Scenes of The Dream’s IV Play Video Shoot

By Posted on 70 1 m read

Following the release and iTunes pick up of his newest single IV Play, The Dream took to his Instagram account to post behind the scenes pics from his video shoot.

IV Play  is the title track from The Dream’s fifth studio album which is slated for a May 28th release. IV Play the track, which you can hear below, draws on a lot of 90’s R&B like R. Kelly, as well as sounding like some of The Dream’s Love/Hate era work, specifically Falsetto.  In promo of the single we have some of the behind the scenes photos which were posted on his Instagram this past weekend. In what seems a really strategic move, not much was revealed about the video by the pics he posted other than it being seemingly pretty minimalistic. Check the pics below and we want ot hear your take on what could potentially be a controversial pose? Tell us if you see it! And if you haven’t heard IV Play yet don’t worry, we got you on that too.
