Oprah Winfrey Donates $2 Million To Puerto Rico For Disaster Relief

By Posted on 0 2 m read

The island of Puerto Rico has received a major donation from Oprah Winfrey. The philanthropist and media mogul has made a $2 million contribution towards Puerto Rico’s disaster relief efforts. The island is still recovering from two back-to-back hurricanes that hit in 2017.

According to the Huffington Post, Winfrey’s donation was announced on Monday (April 8) by the Hispanic Federation and the Flamboyan Arts Fund. Both were founded last year by Lin-Manuel Miranda, a Tony Award-winning actor and Hamilton creator. Miranda’s parents were born in Puerto Rico and he also visits his grandparents there.

After visiting San Juan last year and attending the production of Hamilton, Oprah Winfrey decided to donate $1 million to each organization for revitalization projects.

“I was so moved by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s commitment to bring ‘Hamilton’ to Puerto Rico and support the community that served him growing up that I wanted to join in the revitalization efforts of an island so rich in culture, beauty, and heritage,” Winfrey said in a statement. “The needs of Puerto Rico and our fellow American citizens following the tragic hurricanes are still very real.”

In the midst of trying to rebuild and restore what was left behind by the 2017 hurricanes, Lin-Manuel also took to Twitter to correct the misinformed President Donald Trump who continuously bashed Puerto Rico for seeking resources to recover from the hurricanes. Trump stated that Puerto Rico received $91 billion for disaster relief while “all of their local politicians do is complain and ask for more money.” Lin-Manuel corrected Trump stating that $91 billion was the estimated damage and that Puerto Rico is still waiting for most of their allocated relief funds.

By Posted on 57 1 m read

If you follow Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade on social media then you know the couple has been in a state of bliss since welcoming their beautiful baby girl Kaavia James Union Wade earlier this month.

Kaavia (pronounced Kah-Vee-Uh) was born via surrogate after Gabrielle opened up about her struggle with infertility. In her book, We’re Going To Need More Wine, Gabrielle revealed that she’d suffered multiple miscarriages in an attempt to have a child with her husband and NBA star Dwayne Wade.

“I have had eight or nine miscarriages,” Union writes. “For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant — I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”

Baby Kaavia will be making her first guest appearance on the OWN network for a televised special with Union and Wade airing Saturday, Dec. 8 at 8 p.m. Oprah at Home with Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade & Their New Baby will be about the couple’s path to parenthood. Oprah describes the conversation as one “for every parent and anyone who became a family in their own way.”

Breaking down the meaning of their daughter’s name, which means “work of art” in the Sanskrit language, Gabrielle also says:

“We wanted to include my family in her name, so the ‘James’ is from my uncle James Francis Glass who is also my godfather.”

Congratulations to both Gabrielle and Dwayne.

Oprah Signs Multi-Year Partnership With Apple & Here’s What You Should Know About It

By Posted on 0 1 m read

In case you missed it, Apple recently took to their website to announce a multi-year content partnership with Oprah Winfrey. The tech giant and media mogul will create original content that will be released as part of a lineup from Apple. “Together, Winfrey and Apple will create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world,” says their official website.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pact includes everything from film, TV, applications, books, and other content that could easily be distributed on Apple’s all-encompassing platform. However, the deal does not include podcasts, as Oprah has her own platform for that. Oprah will continue to serve as the chairman and CEO of the Discovery Communications-backed cable network, OWN. In December, Discovery reportedly paid Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo, Inc. $70 million to acquire an additional 24.5% stake in OWN, the companies’ joint venture.

Although Apple has shared no additional details regarding the deal, it has been said that Oprah’s Harpo Films will own any and all content produced under the Apple partnership.

Oprah Winfrey’s Weight Watchers Stock Value Worth More Than $400 Million

By Posted on 0 1 m read

After purchasing a 10% stake in Weight Watchers for a total of $43.5 million, Oprah Winfrey’s 2015 investment in the weight loss program is now worth $400 million.

When Oprah announced her investment in Weight Watchers back in October 2015, shares reportedly rose more than 80%. Also, providing insight into her 26-pound weight loss journey with the program caused company stocks to rise 20%. However, according to Black Enterprise, just a few months later Weight Watchers saw shares drop 30% after the company announced a quarterly loss of $11 million.

Consistently reporting earnings and sales, Weight Watchers has managed to top forecasts over the past few quarters, as well as seeing a spike in subscribers. As a result, stock recently surged 5%.

“Our purpose is to inspire healthy habits for real life for people, families, communities, the world,” says CEO Mindy Grossman. She added that “we want to own the healthy kitchen” and “make healthy cooking accessible to everyone.”

Oprah, who is still on the company’s board, owns nearly 5.5 million shares. But she sold about 2 million in March at prices ranging from about $58 to $64 a share. Winfrey made $110 million in the process. She also donated more than 360,000 shares to her charitable organization.

Weight Watchers shares were trading around $75 Friday (May 4) and are up an astonishing 70% this year. Winfrey invested in the stock when it was trading for less than $7.

The interview covers everything from the now debunked rumour of an Oprah 2020 presidential run to empowering women and manifesting goals. Oprah, explores the moments in her career that made her career and how she has worked through low moments and identifying with the impact of the #TimesUp movement at the wake of Hollywood’s internal cleanse.

“It has seared into the consciouness a level of awareness that was not there before. That’s the most important thing to me. When Reese Witherspoon can tell her story at the same time as a farm worker in Iowa or a factory worker in Alabama, it says to a person, ‘Oh well, I’ve been putting up with that asshole supervisor for all these years. Maybe it’s time for me to do something to.’ You can see that you’re not alone. We don’t have to turn our heads to pretend something isn’t happening in order to keep going.”

Oprah who is called on for many things has the expected busy workload of a Hollywood media mogul. Even she can become overwhelmed by the exhausting news cycle and ability to constantly refresh for more on social media. Logging off is the first step Oprah takes in staying on top of it all.

“I have taken a step back and a couple notches down. I don’t get up and turn on the TV first thing in the morning. I spend quiet time. I try to center myself, and I’m conscious of what I allow in because there’s so much all day long. I have the app that has all the news stories, so I scroll through the 5 Things You Need To Know Today and then choose which of those things I want to explore more.  I try not to lean into the hysteria.

Oprah continues the lighthearted yet heavy hitting interview discussing food, life and more. She even credits Ava DuVernay, citing her as inspiration. When asked “Who’s your Oprah?” she responds with DuVernay and Maya Angelou.

“Ava [Duvernay] is my new one. She’s just burning up; she’s a light! I’m inspired by her. And I feel a real connection, still, to Maya.  Sometimes I can just hear her in my presence.”
