Colin Kaepernick Donates Custom Suits In Front Of New York Parole Office

By Posted on 0 1 m read

NFL player and activist Colin Kaepernick has been busy with positivity during his offseason. The player has not signed a contract with an NFL team yet but he has had his hands in the greatest work one can do.

On Sunday (March 30th), Kaepernick passed out suits in front of the New York State Parole office for people who have been released from prison and are in search of starting a new life and looking for jobs.

All suits are custom made, how dapper is that?

Kaepernick continues to change the world on and off the field. In March, he helped raised $2 million dollars in just four days to get an airplane to fly food and water to Somalia. The quarterback also donated $50,000 to Meals on Wheels.

All of these donations link back to his pledge from back in September when he promised to donate $1 million to disadvantaged communities, along with the proceeds of his jersey sales from the 2016 season.

Keep being a great example Colin Kaepernick, #100Suits!

Gayle King Named One Of Variety Magazines #PowerWomenOfNY

By Posted on 0 2 m read

Every Year,  Variety  magazine spotlights five leading women who are using their platform to influence and shed light on important causes. This year Gayle King was one of the five honorees, the rest include Jessica Chastain, Chelsea Clinton, Blake Lively, Audra McDonald, and Shari Redstone.

King is being recognized for her work with SEO Scholars, a flagship that enrolls 1,500 students into a rigorous academic program. Through SEO Scholars high schoolers are able to receive instruction every Saturday and for the month of July from 9th grade all the way through graduation. The program is led by 80 instructors that break down the curriculum, taught in the Socratic method with an emphasis on critical reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and math!

Whew! Sounds like tutorials on steroids.

King was specifically drawn to this organization because of her love for education. Gayle tells Variety about her childhood, stating that she grew up in a household where it was never a question whether she was going to college. She says she could not wait to attend the University of Maryland, where she double-majored in psychology and sociology. She was ecstatic to find out who her roommates were going to be, what classes she was going to take, and the whole nine when it comes to attending college.

King was lucky to have college be a part of the conversation in her home because, for most children raised in a low economic situation, these conversations do not happen.

“A lot of people know you have to do well on your SATs or ACTs or your parents are getting you a tutor. What if you grow up in a home where nobody does any of that?” – Gayle King via Variety Magazine

Through the SEO Scholars program, kids have a space to excel academically. The SEO Scholars program exposes children to levels of academia that they would not have reached on their own based on their upbringing and community. 100% of the kids who go through the program are accepted into a four-year college.

“Eighty-five percent will be the first in their family to earn a college degree. We see that as a way of breaking the cycle of poverty.” – William Goodloe (President and CEO of SEO)

King took the kids on a tour of her neck of the woods aka the set of “CBS This Morning”. She also had the honor of emceeing and awards dinner for SEO Scholars that raised over $4.0 million.

“They’re teaching these kids at a very early age to get ready. If you get kids early, you get kids who are really committed.” – Gayle King

New York Set To Offer Free Tuition At 4-Year Colleges

Congratulations New York, for becoming the first state to offer tuition-free to four-year colleges!

This past weekend it was announced that New York’s State Senate will be moving forward with approving the next year’s fiscal budget which included a bill that will make college education free at two and four-year public colleges for families that make less than 100,000 per year. This means that nearly 1 million families will be eligible.

In order to receive the Excelsior Scholarship students must be enrolled in college full-time and average 30 credits per years to receive funding. Students must also maintain a passing grade point average and stay in state after college for the same number of years that they received free tuition. If students do not follow the guidelines their scholarship will be converted into loans. Room and board expenses will not be covered under this plan but this is still one heck of a deal!

Not being able to afford college is one of the number one reasons why people do not attend. The Excelsior Scholarship will be changing that and giving people a chance to fairly get an education and better their lives.

This is a growing trend, San Francisco, Tennessee, and Oregon have recently made community colleges free for residents. But New York will be the first state to offer free tuition at four-year universities.

Now, who’s moving to New York?

If you ask most young kids what they want to do for their birthday, some may say a birthday party filled with games, friends, and lots of presents. But, two siblings in New York, passed on the presents to share their special day with those less fortunate.

Meet Nate and Quinn Mitchell, who instead of birthday presents this year, they gave their time to maked nearly 900 sandwiches for a homeless shelter in their city of Menands, New York.

According to ABC News 10, both siblings combined their birthdays this year by volunteering in an organization called Pay It Forward… Together.

Nathan, who will turned 13th told the news outlet, “I just thought it was the right thing to do, and we have so much and [homeless people] have so little, I thought we should give back.”

Following by his sister 10-year-sister Quinn who says, “I saw that I had a lot of stuff at home, and I have a good family. So I decided I wanted to make sandwiches and give them to the homeless shelter.”

Malia Obama Lands Summer Internship With HBO’s ‘Girls’

Even though she’s Barack and Michelle Obama’s daughter that doesn’t make Malia Obama exempt from working hard and gaining hands on experience like the rest of us. The 17-year-old is now an intern for Lena Dunham’s hit HBO show, ‘Girls’ and was spotted on the set in Brooklyn.

According to Page Six, Malia, who celebrates her seventeeth birthday today (July 4),

“… spent about three hours on location in Brooklyn as the HBO show filmed at the Aurora Ristorante, a hipster haven on Grand Street.

There were no sightings of any other Obamas during Malia’s visit, which included time with Dunham, according to sources.”

Good for her! Nothing great is ever accomplished without some old fashion  hard work and we’re happy to see she’s gotten the hang of that.

By Posted on 0 2 m read

Regardless of your personal thoughts on the efficacy of Black History Month, I’m sure we can all agree on it’s merits and intentions. That being said, RevolTV is doing their part in continuing Black History education in a few different ways.

Earlier this month the network, launched by media mogul and icon Diddy, showed the new classic documentary “Brooklyn Boheme” by Nelson George and Diane Paragas. If you haven’t seen the film it’s about the Black Arts movement that took place in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn from the mid 80’s through the 90’s. In the film you get a chance to see many of the greats such as Spike Lee, Branford Marsalis, Chris Rock Rosie Perez and Saul Williams discuss what it was like being young and inspired in the part of New York that’s recently become a hot spot of activity. Listen to the creators talk about it here!

In keeping with that inspiration, and further celebration of Black History Month, RevoltTV came up with an 80 second clip to showcase even more African American greats that have contributed not just to Black History but to American History overall. With over 275 faces of influential Black Americans, Revolt’s Tribute turns into a “name them all” challenge of sorts that had us starting and stopping the clip over and over again to make sure we didn’t miss anyone. Shout out to Revolt for such a dope compilation! Check out the vid below and see if YOU can name all the greats featured, hit us back in the comments with the time stamps for anybody you didn’t recognize. New York City Teens Gets Shocking Evidence Of Terrible “Stop & Frisk” Procedures

By Posted on 0 1 m read

A while ago we reported on New York’s controversial Stop & Frisk policy (here and here) , as well as the ACLU’s attempts at keeping it more honest. In what seems to be that times 100, a Harlem teenager took matters into his own hands to record one of the NUMEROUS times he’d been stopped by police officers in the New York area and the footage he’s gathered is nothing less than shocking. Actually, you might not be surprised at all.

With New York’s new Mayor, Bill De Blasio soon to take office, it will be interesting to see what if any changes are made to the this current initiative. Citizens of New York and even non-resident’s have been very vocal with their opinions of the Stop, Question, Frisk program but no real developments have yet been made. Time will tell.
