Kelly Rowland & Kelly Price To Star In BET’s New Series Centered On The Rise of ‘Soul Train’

By Posted on 0 1 m read

Coming to BET is a brand new scripted series that will tell the story of the legendary 1970’s music and dance television program, Soul Train.

American Soul will be a 10-episode drama that centers on the emergence of Soul Train, its creator, the late Don Cornelius, and a cutthroat Hollywood in the 1970’s. It will also highlight Soul Train’s influence on American culture and the mainstream acceptance of Black music.

It has been announced that Grammy Award-winning singer and actress Kelly Rowland will star as Gladys Knight in the upcoming series. Rowland’s multi-episodic role is pivotal as Knight was one of the first performers booked during the early days of Soul Train. You may remember an October 2016 Instagram post by Gladys Knight asking fans if they thought Kelly Rowland would be the perfect person to star in her biopic. How ironic is that?

Joining the cast as a series regular, according to Billboard, is also Grammy Award-nominated singer Kelly Price. Price will star as Brianne Clarke, the head of the Clarke family whose children Simone and Kendall are rising stars in Los Angeles.

Jesse Collins, Jonathan Prince and Devon Greggory are set to executive produce. Don’s son, Tony Cornelius, will co-exec produce alongside Andy Horne. Greggory will pen the pilot, and Jesse Collins Entertainment will produce. The series will premiere in 2019.

Motherhood and Charity Work Are The Two Main Focuses of Kelly Rowland’s Holiday Season

R&B singer Kelly Rowland enjoys motherhood and her son Titan has interests of his own. In a recent interview with People, Rowland detailed her now 3-year-old son’s hobbies as well as her philanthropic work with Baby2Baby, a charity which supports family needs.

Titan, a toddler with a world to explore finds joy this holiday season in the classic film ‘Home Alone’. The family enjoyed choosing a Christmas tree, singing carols and drinking hot cocoa together. Besides having a favorite holiday movie, Titan also has a favorite holiday tune Rowland tells People. If Titan is not singing ‘Jingle Bell Rock’, he’s marathoning his favorite movie Home Alone every morning laughing at the holiday hijinks, a tradition he started himself.

“Titan’s favorite song is ‘Jingle Bell Rock’. And if I hear that damn song one more time I’m probably going to beat myself.  It’s really bad,” Rowland jokingly exclaimed.

Kelly Rowland and husband Tim Weatherspoon have learned new things about themselves and the world through their son. His curious disposition and playful imagination allow Titan to notice things Rowland herself did not know existed.  Back when the couple found out they were expecting, Rowland was approached by Kelly Sawyer, co-president of Baby2Baby who explained the organizations mission and how they support growing families.

Baby2Baby, one of Rowland’s choice charities, supplies low-income children up to the age of 12 with diapers, clothing and other basic necessities for a comfortable life. When Roland was pregnant, Sawyer told her how she would be receiving a lot of things that she would not end up using and that moms who could use the items existed.

“You just think about I would want someone to have that concern and thought about me if I wasn’t able to do that. It’s such a beautiful community of mothers and their families who care about these families so I’m very proud.” says Rowland.

This past Sunday,  the Baby2Baby Holiday Party took place in Beverly Hills served 100 families and each child in attendance was able to choose from a selection of gifts. Attendees included Kelly Rowland, Jessica Alba, Rachel Zoe and more.

Issa Rae and Solange Knowles Come Together To Help Save ‘My Two Cents’, A Black And Female-Owned Soul Food Restaurant

By Posted on 0 2 m read

Issa Rae and Solange Knowles are some of our “go to” girls for the culture. A Seat At The Table and Insecure are certified and profound works of art, that were both needed during this rough political and social climate. These queens are unapologetically black and progressive in showcasing all of the beauty that black women and black people have to offer to music, television, the internet, and our nation. Their artistic work truly exhibits #BlackGirlMagic in its purest form.

The duo, who previously worked together on the fire soundtrack for Season 1 of the hit HBO series Insecure are combining their melanin forces once again to help save a struggling business owner.

Last Friday, Knowles, and Rae hosted “Wine and Grind” a fundraising event that benefited the My Two Cents eatery. The restaurant is owned by Los-Angeles based chef Alisa Reynolds. In July Reynolds created a GoFundMe page to help settle a $130,000 lawsuit that the eatery is facing.

“For the past two years, I have suffered in silence because of a legal battle. Honestly, I am facing the biggest obstacle of my professional life,” she wrote, noting that the lawsuit stems from early backers of her business who she said that they, “misunderstood the culinary process.”

“If I do not raise $130,000 by August 15, 2017, I may no longer be able to continue working at Two Cents L.A.,” she continued. “My absence will affect the other 17 beautiful people who work with me and pour their hearts and souls into the food that they prepare each day.”

With the help of Saint HeronRae and Knowles were able to organize a private dinner and fundraiser at a secret location in efforts to #SaveMyTwoCents. The beautiful Kelly Rowland and talented Melina Matsoukas who was featured in #TheLivingCivilSeries served as hosts.

“Saint Heron’s Wine and Grind was a magical night I’ll always cherish. The room was filled with genuine love and support for Chef Alisa, and a reminder of how powerful sisterhood can be when we all come together to uplift one another. Hearing Solange and Kelly Rowland rave about Chef Alisa firsthand was adoring. And I can’t blame them because her food was amazing.” – Jessica Washington via The Huffington Post

All proceeds from Wine and Grind are going to Reynolds’ restaurant.

Major kudos to Solange and Issa for stepping up and being selfless, we wish the My Two Cents soul food eatery much success in the future!

Kelly Rowland Covers Parents Magazine With Baby Titan

By Posted on 0 1 m read

Kelly Rowland has been a bit more quiet on the music front in the last year, but it’s all due to her adjusting to being a mother.

The “Kisses Down Low” singer gave birth to her baby son, Titan, about a year ago, and she has been learning the ropes of being a new parent.

It looks like all of her work and dedication to her son has been paying off, as the two covered Parents Magazine together, and he is a real cutie.

Titan is seen in his mommy’s arms, sporting a huge smile that will definitely remind you of his superstar parent.

She said of her coming into parenthood, “I was nervous that I didn’t have the patience to be a good mom, because before Titan I had zero. My OCD had to go out the window. My living room looks like a freaking day care!”

We can’t wait to see Titan grow up even more, since he seems to be doing it pretty quickly.

Live Civil’s Top 5 R&B Albums of 2013

By Posted on 66 3 m read

In light of recent award shows naming acts such as Rihanna, in their R&B category, we took it upon ourselves to compose a list of who WE think had the best R&B albums of 2013. Nothing against the reigning Queen of Ratch, it’s just she’s sincerely a pop artist and we won’t even mention the main reason she was probably thrown into the “R&B” category. That being said, here’s my top 5 R&B albums of 2013:

5. Ariana Grande – Yours Truly
Being compared to the incomparable Mariah Carey right out the gate is a feat in itself; but with the willingness of the media to bestow unwarranted titles and accolades, sometimes you have to take a second look. While Ariana Grande is not Mariah Carey, she is in fact a very talented singer that, on her first cd, has given us some great 90’s era R&B moments. The staccato delivery of the bridge on “Honeymoon Avenue” is one of my favorite parts to sing in the shower (which we know is one of the most important factors) and this album you can definitely play top to bottom.

4. Kelly Rowland – Talk A Good Game
If Beyonce is the oven/stove of the musical kitchen, then Kelly would be the crock pot/slow-cooker. While everybody loves a hearty meal, sometimes you don’t need to go ALL THE WAY in to get some good food, sometimes it’s nice to let things take their time. That’s exactly what you have with Kelly as an artist and with this TAGG album. Kelly is always consistent with the vocals, and some would even say that her sexy moments feel a bit more genuine than…other artists. And her song “Red Wine”, flawless.

3. K. Michelle – Rebellious Soul
2. Tamar Braxton – Love and War
I have absolutely no problem admitting that I’m not the biggest fan of K. Michelle or Tamar, however, talent is talent and both of these ladies are among a VERY few with REAL vocal chops in the industry right now. Rebellious Soul is reminiscent of that first and second Keyshia Cole album that EVERYBODY loved. K’s voice powers through songs that are the perfect track to key your ex’s car to. Tamar is a little more balanced and plays like a normal relationship. You have your ups and downs but when you’re in love you enjoy the whole ride. Bravo to both of these women.

1. John Legend – Love In The Future
As the only male on the list, John holds it down with this album. A very stripped down performance, occasionally with a piano being the only accompaniment, John EMOTES throughout this entire album. The production on this album is a bit more experimental than we’re used to from John but it works so well on this project, a la the track “Asylum”. He has the requisite rapper feature with Rick Ross entitled, “Who Do We Think We Are” and he collab on the interlude “Angel” with Stacy Barthe will bless and piss you off at the same time.

Honorable Mention
Travis Garland and Sevyn Streeter both put out SOLID R&B projects this year (Sevyn’s EP debuted just this week) and while they didn’t make the cut, if you’re not familiar you should DEFINITELY add them into your rotation ASAP!

Let us know if you guys agree, disagree or if we left anybody off!
