Issa Rae Talks Choosing A Healthier Diet & Getting In Shape With Women’s Health Magazine

By Posted on 58 2 m read

Issa Rae is on the cover of Women’s Health magazine’s April 2019 issue. With so many things keeping the 34-year-old actress and executive producer busy such as the fourth season of her HBO hit show ‘Insecure’, which will soon begin production, the body-swapping comedy film ‘Little’, a limited-run series on HBO titled ‘The Dolls’, and so much more, it’s hard not to wonder how Issa stays in shape with such a hectic schedule!

During her interview with Women’s Health, Issa recalls gaining what she called “new money weight” once opportunities started to pour in following the success of ‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl‘, a web series in which she created on YouTube in 2011.

“When the Web series started, I was very, very broke,” she explains. “Then more opportunities began to come. I was gaining new money weight. When you get a good job, you’re like, ‘I can afford to eat at restaurants all the time!’ That adds up in weight.”

Even though she’d become extremely busy, it wasn’t until she saw herself on television that Issa knew she needed to make some changes. And as most of us can relate, exercising and making healthy eating a priority isn’t easy.

“Time to work out is so limited, but when I first started seeing myself on TV, I was like, ‘I gotta make time,'” Issa says. “I was a big excuse person when it came to exercising and eating right. I’d have spurts of trying to work out and being good. Then once I fell off, I’d be like, ‘Well, there’s always next year. Let me make it my New Year’s resolution.’ But even then, I would still be eating wrong while exercising vigorously.”

Instead of hitting the local gym, Issa Rae sets her alarm clock for 4:55 am and alternates between walking and jogging in her neighborhood, which also provides her with a sense of peace.

“I exercise for, like, an hour each day,” she explains. “My neighborhood has a bunch of hills, so it’s walking up hills. Then I alternate between walking and jogging. I hate jogging—you’re going in circles, but I recognize that it helps.” She continues, “You know those earbuds that you put in your ears? I was running, and one fell. It was dark outside and I couldn’t find it. So I was forced to just be alone with my thoughts, and I was like, ‘Oh, I need to do this more often.’ Those moments are the most creative. I think finding those moments while also nurturing your body is important.”

Issa Rae & Kumail Nanjiani To Star In Romantic Comedy ‘The Lovebirds’

By Posted on 0 1 m read

Following the announcement of a brand new film she’s set to star in alongside Regina Hall and Marsai Martin, Issa Rae remains booked and busy as she will be starring in yet another film, this time alongside Kumail Nanjiani.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘The Lovebirds’, written by Aaron Abrams, Brendan Gall, and Martin Gero, is a romantic comedy that centers on a couple on the brink of a breakup. The pair subsequently become embroiled in a bizarre and hijinks-filled murder mystery, and as they get close to clearing their names and solving the case, the twosome needs to figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.

The Paramount project goes into production at the end of this month with Michael Showalter set to direct. Showalter previously directed Nanjiani on the set of the 2017 film ‘The Big Sick’. Nanjiani, Rae, and Showalter are also serving as executive producers.

Coming to theaters on April 12th will be a new body-switching comedy film starring Regina Hall, Issa Rae, and 14-year-old ‘Black-ish’ actress Marsai Martin. It was recently announced that with the film, titled ‘Little’, Martin would become the youngest black executive producer in Hollywood history. Read more here.

Issa Rae Wants To Change Portrayal of Dark-Skinned Black Women In Television & Film

By Posted on 0 1 m read

Within the black community, colorism is something I would describe as an uphill battle. On one hand, you have people who will deny the fact the colorism even exists, but then you have people like Issa Rae who is aware of and actively attentive to colorism and is willing to combat those issues head-on.

During the Insecure Fest in Los Angeles, the ‘Insecure’ actress and show-runner spoke about her plans to change the way that dark-skinned black women are portrayed in television and film. “Dark-skinned women still portray a certain archetype and I want to change that,” she said. “They’re either super strong, emotionless, robotic — or hyper-sexual, and you don’t get the in-between very much.”

Actress Yvonne Orji, who is also a dark-skinned woman and plays Issa Rae’s best friend Molly, also expressed her desire for people to see how dynamic and multi-faceted dark-skinned black women can be. We too deserve and are capable of playing lead roles. “I want the portrayal of dark-skinned women to evolve in such a way that you see us as multi-faceted,” said Orji. “We are more than just the sassy friend or the maid. We’re so dynamic. We can be the leads.”

‘Insecure’ season three returns to HBO on Aug. 12.

Issa Rae Stars In CoverGirl’s New ‘Inclusive’ Campaign Which Offers 40 New Foundation Shades

By Posted on 46 2 m read

As the makeup industry continues to progress, brands such as Make Up For Ever, Fenty Beauty, Dior, Lancôme, Tarte, CoverFX, and CoverGirl have all released inclusive foundations catering to 40 different shades of women.

CoverGirl, who recently released their 40-shade TruBlend Matte Made foundation, has called on actress and producer Issa Rae, 70-year-old model Maye Musk, and professional motorcycle racer Shelina Moreda for their new inclusive campaign.

Like many of us, CoverGirl spokesperson Issa Rae expressed her frustration with her skin tone not being represented in the cosmetics industry. “The most frustrating thing is going to a store in a pinch and trying to get your shade and finding that no one is checking for you,” she told InStyle Magazine. “It’s such a gut punch to be like, ‘Oh, no one even thought of me. No one is even checking for my skin tone.'”

The announcement came last month as CoverGirl stated in a press release that they would add an additional 26 shades to their existing TruBlend foundation collection.

Excited to be a part of the CoverGirl campaign, Issa told People, “There’s so much attention being paid to making sure that people are being included and represented, and Covergirl is making that a priority and I feel like I can get behind that. This particular foundation and the messaging overall has people embracing who they are and their individuality in a way that’s really being celebrated right now.”

The TruBlend Matte Made foundation is available at Walmart for just $8.44.

Issa Rae To Join Marsai Martin In Will Packer Produced Film ‘Little’

By Posted on 67 1 m read

Actress Issa Rae is set to join Black-ish star Marsai Martin in the Universal Pictures comedy Little. The film tells a story of a woman who gets the pleasure to relive life as her younger self (Marsai) when the pressures of adulthood become too much.

Issa Rae, who will also star in another upcoming film titled The Hate U Give, will be playing the older version of Marsai Martin’s character.

Aboard to produce the film is Girls Trip producers Will Packer and James Lopez via Will Packer Productions, along with Black-ish creator, Kenya Barris. Executive producing the film will be Marsai Martin, Girls Trip actress Regina Hall, and Josh Martin.

Based on the creative ideas of Marsai, the comedy’s original draft was written by Girls Trip screenwriter Tracy Oliver. However, a later version was then written by Drumline screenwriter Tina Gordon, who will also serve as the director of Little. Camilla Blackett (Fresh Off the Boat and New Girl) is now working on the latest draft following Gordon.

Issa Rae is best known as the creator and star of HBO hit series Insecure.

Little will hit theaters on September 20, 2019.

ICYMI: Issa Rae Announces New Series ‘The Awoken’ for ColorCreative.TV

By Posted on 0 3 m read

ColorCreative.TV, the company set up by writer/actor/producer Issa Rae (Insecure) and producing partner Deniese Davis, along with European pay TV giant Sky’s production and distribution arm Sky Vision and New York production firm Talos Films have picked The Awoken by Katelyn Howes as the winner of their new talent initiative Fresh Wave!

The initiative is described as “a writing competition designed to give emerging and underrepresented writers an opportunity to pitch an original television series idea and see it go from script to screen.”

The Awoken, is a sci-fi drama chosen from more than 2,000 entries, follows Alabine Rivers, a teenager who was cryogenically preserved in 2017 only to be resurrected in 2103.

“Alabine is forced to join an underground network of rebels fighting for the basic human rights of The Awoken – others like her who have been frozen and then resurrected – who are ruthlessly hunted down by a regime that has restricted scientific advancement and technology and returned the country to an agrarian distopia,” according to a show description.

The protagonist also struggles to piece together flashbacks and memories of Max, a fellow activist and the love of her life who she assumes she left behind in the 20th century.

Golden Globe nominee Rae unveiled a roughly 10-minute “taster” of a pilot of The Awoken, which is produced by ColorCreative.TV and Talos and funded by Sky Vision, at an event for press and buyers in Los Angeles. Fresh Wave! was launched by Rae and Insecure co-producer Deniese Davis to “find the next breakout writer.”

Managing director of Sky Vision Jane Millichip said: “Sky Vision is committed to developing and showcasing diverse new talent worldwide. Katelyn has conceived a remarkable idea and delivered it with true sophistication. With Issa and Denese’s writing expertise, the production skill of Talos Films, and Sky Vision’s backing, I’m sure The Awoken will have huge international appeal.”

Millichip told THR that the competition’s goal was to find new voices that are “not in that narrow echo chamber that so many of us in the media  find ourselves.” She said there were many great entries, with The Awoken being “a really interesting and very human story about alienation” and struggles with technology and social mobility that is set in a “future that is not full of flying cars” and not “all shiny.” Calling it “a very clever parable for the world today,” she said the project is “universal” and “fantastically commercial as well.”

She expects “quite a lot of interest” in the project, Millichip said.

Sky Vision in 2016 backed Talos in its launch. Said Talos co-presidents Elli Hakami, a former MTV executive, and Julian Hobbs, formerly with History: “We believe The Awoken does what all great science fiction does, it moves the heart as well as the mind. It also give us a lens into our present by looking into the near future.”

Rae said of the initiative:

“Providing a platform for underrepresented voices is extremely important to me, particularly with so many polarizing views dominating the mainstream right now. I’m so pleased that Fresh Wave! has produced not just a fantastic winner in Katelyn [Howes, creator of The Awoken], but a wealth of new voices amongst the other finalists, showing that there is a huge amount of diverse young talent out there ready to light up our screens.”
