Freeform’s ‘Grown-ish’ Partners With Scholly For Student Loan Payoff Program

By Posted on 0 2 m read

The second season of Freeform’s Grown-ish, starring Yara Shahidi, premieres tonight with two back-to-back episodes. The Black-ish spinoff has partnered with Scholly, a scholarship search app, to help student loan borrowers pay off up to $125,000 in student loan debt. According to Scholly’s official website, the average student will be $40,000 in debt by the time they graduate.

“Scholly, up until now has focused on helping students avoid student loan debt but, we want to help those who have already amassed a certain amount of student loan debt break free of it,” Scholly founder Chris Gray tells Black Enterprise. “This is just the beginning. Our plan is to do a lot more of these sorts of grants in the near future.”

Scholly was named in Inc. Magazine’s Top College Start-Ups, won Under Armour’s Cupid’s Cup competition, and won Steve Case’s Rise of the Rest Competition. Gray was also named Ernst and Young’s Entrepreneur of the year for 2015 for Philadelphia and is one of Forbes’ 30 under 30 for 2016. The company was featured on ABC’s hit show, Shark Tank, landing a deal with Daymond John and Lori Greiner. After being featured on the show, Scholly grew to become the #1 overall app in both the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store for over 3 weeks.

You have from today up until Jan. 31st at 11:59PM PST to apply for the Student Loan Payoff Program. Winners will be announced at the 2019 Freeform Summit. Good luck!

Yara Shahidi plays Zoey Johnson, the oldest of three children on the sitcom ‘Black-Ish’ and now Shahidi will take Zoey Johnson on her own journey with a spin-off. ‘Grown-ish’ which airs on Freeform takes Shahidi’s character through a college as she experiences the ups and downs of coming into adulthood.

Yara Shahidi who at just 17 years old,  can closely relate to her character’s transition from young adult to actual adult takes Zoey Johnson to the campus of fictional Californian university where she is met with all of the vices of college life.  While ‘Grown-ish’ is a spin-off of ‘Black-Ish; and the characters from each so coexist, Shahidi is firm that Zoey Johnson and her black millennial angst and passion will be prevalent in the new series.

“Yes, you do see my TV parents, and you see me on “black-ish” as well. “grown-ish” is very distinctly Zoey’s journey, but it’s not as though she is some lost child” says Shahidi to The New York Times.

‘Grown-ish’ caters to a younger audience than parent series ‘Black-ish’ and Freeform, a network geared to older teens and young adults is the perfect host. The network jumped at the idea to run the story of Zoey Johnson and her co-ed counterparts, an effort boosted by the bright talent of Yara Shahidi.

“Two words: Yara Shahidi,” Karey Burke, Freeform’s executive VP programming, tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Shahidi is not the only stand-out talent to call ‘Grown-ish’ home. She is joined by multi-talented Trevor Jackson, and R&B super duo Chloe and Halle who also wrote and perform the theme song for the show.  Watching these young adults journey through dormitories across quads and survive mid-terms captures the essence of a freshman year experience while highlighting important and relative issues.
