14-Year-Old Taylor Richardson Raises Money To Send 1,000 Girls To See ‘A Wrinkle In Time’

By Posted on 58 2 m read

Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time will soon take girl power on the big screen to the next level and many are excited see the Ava DuVernay directed fantasy film.  The film which debuts March 9th stars a leading cast of powerful girls and women and 14-year-old Taylor Richardson is doing her part to ensure all girls get a chance to see the film.

Richardson, an aspiring engineer and astronaut from Jacksonville, Fla. launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to send 1,000 girls to see A Wrinkle in Time, as well as gift each a copy of the novel. Her initial goal of $15,000 was surpassed reaching almost $18,000.  This philanthropic effort is not Richardson’s first time raising money to allow girls see different representations of themselves on screen.

Award winning film Hidden Figures starring Taraji P Henson, Janelle Monae and Octavia Spencer, telling the story of real black women who’s mathematical, engineering and leadership skills helped put man on the moon was also met with similar goals. Richardson raised over $20,000 for girls, especially those interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to see the groundbreaking film.

A Wrinkle In Time is just as important to young girls as Hidden Figures. Starring Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling in leading roles, youth across the world can be inspired by the diversity on screen. Richardson, who has been named on Teen Vogue’s ’21 Under 21′ list writes on the campaign page the significance of this film to black girls everywhere.

“It shows young, black girl girls deserving a chance to be a part of the scifi cultural canon.” writes Richardson.

“Most impressive and importantly it’s a fantasy film that is not about some white boys fighting evil, but about a black girl overcoming it”

Any additional funds raised after sending 1000 girls to see the film and also gift them copies of A Wrinkle In Time will go towards projects, events and scholarships, brining diversity and gender equality in the STEM field.

By Posted on 52 2 m read

Anyone can make a difference, no matter how old they are. Meet Khloe Thompson, the nine year old who sews creative toiletry bags for homeless women in Los Angeles.

Khloe lives in Southern California and sews together durable bags and stocks them with essential items for the homeless women in neighborhood. The bags, called “Kare Bags” are a part of her movement, Khloe Kares which is all about giving back to the community.

Khloe designs and sew the bags herself, along with her grandmother. The essentials in the bag include: deodorant, wipes, toothpaste, soap, washcloths, hand sanitizer, and feminine care products.

She then delivers the bags to the women with her mother. Her mother is actually the one who started the entire ordeal. On her way to school, Khloe would ask her mom what she could do to help, after passing by the same homeless people each day. Then that’s how the entire initiative of Khloe Kares came about. The purpose has been received extremely well.

Khloe told the women on The Real that when the women react they are “really happy”, even giving her hugs.

Some of Khloe’s classmates at school have even contributed to her cause, donating items to put in the bags.

Khloe’s next big project will be a Toy Drive. She says,

“I want to supply dolls and trucks to kids who live in group homes. These kids have not had the same advantages as I have had in life, and I really want to give back and brighten their day.”

Also, Khloe and her mother are working to make “Khloe Kares” a registered 501(c)3 charity organization to continue giving back to the community. “No dream is too small or too big,” Khloe writes on her website. She wants to inspire other children to be great and make their mark on this earth by helping others.

Help Khloe Make a Difference and be sure to keep up with her here.

Be sure to head over to the official campaign site to learn more about this project.

The campaign description states the following:

My name is Trinidad James. I’m an artist from Atlanta,GA. I was born in Trinidad and Tobago and I currently live in Los Angeles, California. I want to bring awareness to a subject and issue that happened in the world this year. The issue happened in Kenya at Garissa Univeristy College. A terrorist group came in and killed 147 students. Amongst the 147, a policemen, solidier and two watchmen were also killed. The number of casualties makes it one of the deadliest terror attacks in the country’s recent history. So many things happen in Africa and I personally believe it gets swept under the rug. Today, I would like to take the time to ask the world to CARE and BE AWARE. The 147 people killed were fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, and grandparents who didn’t deserve what happened to them. I’m coming to you today because I want to raise 147,000 (US Dollars) to give back to the families of the victims who died that sad day in Kenya. In addition, I will be doing a free concert in Kenya to raise more money on top of the 147,000 (US Dollars) that we raise to disburse to the families in Africa while I’m there. I would also like to be able to present a check to Kenya at the end of the show for 147,000 for those families who lost a loved one in this tragic incident.  Please help and DONATE! We are taking anything from a dollar and up! I appreciate you for taking the time out to read this and I hope that I moved you in a way to get you aware of what’s going on in Kenya. Tell a friend to tell a friend that we are trying to help Kenya, Africa and most importantly the WORLD. Thank you! #TrinidadInKenya
