Issa Rae Stars In CoverGirl’s New ‘Inclusive’ Campaign Which Offers 40 New Foundation Shades

By Posted on 53 2 m read

As the makeup industry continues to progress, brands such as Make Up For Ever, Fenty Beauty, Dior, Lancôme, Tarte, CoverFX, and CoverGirl have all released inclusive foundations catering to 40 different shades of women.

CoverGirl, who recently released their 40-shade TruBlend Matte Made foundation, has called on actress and producer Issa Rae, 70-year-old model Maye Musk, and professional motorcycle racer Shelina Moreda for their new inclusive campaign.

Like many of us, CoverGirl spokesperson Issa Rae expressed her frustration with her skin tone not being represented in the cosmetics industry. “The most frustrating thing is going to a store in a pinch and trying to get your shade and finding that no one is checking for you,” she told InStyle Magazine. “It’s such a gut punch to be like, ‘Oh, no one even thought of me. No one is even checking for my skin tone.'”

The announcement came last month as CoverGirl stated in a press release that they would add an additional 26 shades to their existing TruBlend foundation collection.

Excited to be a part of the CoverGirl campaign, Issa told People, “There’s so much attention being paid to making sure that people are being included and represented, and Covergirl is making that a priority and I feel like I can get behind that. This particular foundation and the messaging overall has people embracing who they are and their individuality in a way that’s really being celebrated right now.”

The TruBlend Matte Made foundation is available at Walmart for just $8.44.

Amy Deanna Is CoverGirl’s First Model With Vitiligo

CoverGirl has stars such as Issa Rae and Ayesha Curry on their brand roster and the brand continues to highlight diverse representations of beauty with their chosen models. Amy Deanna becomes the first model with the skin condition vitiligo to model for the brand.

The commercial launched with CoverGirl’s #IAmWhatIMakeUp campaign, which pushes for a more accepting and welcoming beauty industry. Celebrating the power to be who you are and who you want to be, CoverGirl continues to prove “Why try to blend in when you can choose to stand out?” says Deanna during the commercial.

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes skin to develop patches, lighter in color than a majority of the skin. Popular runway and fashion model Winnie Harlow also has this disease.

“The fashion and beauty industry sometimes feels like a private party that only a select few get invited to,” says Deanna during an interview with PEOPLE.

It’s very you can’t sit with us.’ To me, that is not progressive. We have to be more inclusive. Diversity is important. Representation is important. Inclusivity is important—not just for people of different backgrounds and ethnicities, but also people of all sizes. That’s why I was so excited to partner with CoverGirl on this project. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, etc. Let’s face it, together we are a mosaic—that in itself is beautiful. We should celebrate that.”

Issa Rae Is The New Face of CoverGirl

Issa Rae just landed her first beauty gig and it’s with none other than Covergirl. The creator and star of Insecure just announced the news about her beauty deal on Instagram with the makeup brand.

“I remember being an awkward black girl in high school, reading the pages of my favorite magazines, casually flipping through @COVERGIRL ads, singing their slogan in my head. Never EVER in my life did I imagine I’d be one. I am SO honored and SO excited for what’s to come,” Rae captioned her photo.

“My character is ever-evolving, and makeup is a tool to help transform my persona – whether for a role I play in content that I produce, or the different roles I take on in my life,” the star said in a release. “Becoming a Covergirl means a lot because the brand recognizes just how important it is for people to embrace their individuality and express themselves in unique and diverse ways,” she continued. “This has been a major part of my personal journey, and a message that I want to share with others.”

Congratulations Issa Rae, we’re so excited for you!
