Steph & Ayesha Curry Foundation Launches Scholarship Program For Girls

By Posted on 0 2 m read

The Steph & Ayesha Curry Family Foundation has launched an annual scholarship for college-bound female students from the Bay Area who are interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.

The idea of the scholarship was inspired by 9-year-old Riley Morrison, who wrote a letter to Steph Curry expressing her frustration with the lack of sneakers in the girls section of the Under Armour website. Not only did the Golden State Warriors point guard send Morrison two pairs of Curry sneakers, but the two also collaborated on a special purple colorway version of the Curry 6 sneakers, which was introduced in honor of International Women’s Day. Because Curry didn’t feel comfortable profiting off of Riley’s shoe design, he decided that the profits will fund a scholarship.

“The Steph & Ayesha Curry Family Foundation is funding an annual scholarship that’s given to a college-bound female student from the Bay Area who has shown an aptitude for overcoming adversity, catalyzing change within her community and demonstrating excellence in a STEM-related field of study,” according to the foundation. “The $30,000 scholarship, whose first recipient will be announced at tonight’s Golden State Warriors game, is paid over two years and requires the recipient to take two or more STEM-related classes each semester while maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA.”

During the Golden State Warriors’ Friday night (March 8) game against the Denver Nuggets, the first recipient of the scholarship was announced. Vivian Wu is a senior at Oakland Tech, has a 4.2 GPA, and has completed over 300 hours of community service as an advocate for marginalized communities, including survivors of domestic violence.

Ayesha Curry and Chef Michael Mina’s International Smoke Will Open In Houston

California chef Michael Mina and Food Network host Ayesha Curry will bring their grill-obsessed restaurant International Smoke to Houston.

International Smoke is set to debut at CityCentre next year, making Houston the third location for the restaurant, according to a press release. It’s a collaboration between the James Beard Award-winning Mina, who operates a number of restaurants in California and beyond, and Curry, an actress and host of Ayesha’s Homemade. According to Eater San Francisco, the first outpost of the restaurant will open next week, and another is set to arrive in Waikiki next year.

According to a press release, the restaurant will bring “global approaches on fire, grilling, and smoke” to Space City. The restaurant project began at Mina’s Test Kitchen, where Chef Hugo Ortega opened Mi Almita back in August. “I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of CityCentre,” Mina said in a statement. “Our International Smoke menu highlights global flavors that are balanced out by pairing an array of spices with delicious meats, seafood and fresh produce. I’m excited to share these bold and dynamic dishes with the people of Houston.”

International Smoke is expected to open in early 2018. Stay tuned for an official opening date.

Black History Month Appreciation (Day 9): The Curry’s

By Posted on 0 2 m read

We’re back with day 9 of our #LiveCivilBHM series, where each day of this year’s Black History Month, we pay homage to a black man or woman (or family) who we admire. Today, we put the spotlight on an amazing family we’ve all grown to love — The Curry’s.

Golden State Warriors shooting guard Steph Curry is deemed one of the best, if not the best, basketball player currently playing in the NBA. His humble attitude on and off the court and his happy-go-lucky mentality has catapulted Steph from a Davidson University prospect — who may or may not make it to the big leagues — into an NBA champion, an MVP, and is now being called the best shooter in the history of the game by many.

What’s there not to like about Steph?

His wife Ayesha and their adorable daughter Riley stole our hearts during the 2015 NBA Playoffs run, when Riley joined Steph during a post-game press conference. Wanting to spend time with her very busy dad, Riley made her presence known by singing Big Sean’s “Blessings” into the mic, telling her dad to quiet down while he was talking and a slew of other hilarious moments we sadly left behind in 2015.

Then, soon after the Warriors won the NBA championship, Steph and Ayesha welcomed their 2nd baby girl into the world, Ryan.

As you can see in the photo above, Riley is already assuming her role as big sister in a great way.

With Steph Curry (and the Warriors) on pace to make history this NBA season, we can safely say it’s his family’s support that keeps him going day in and day out. As Kevin Durant told his mother during his 2014 MVP acceptance speech: Steph, Ayesha, Riley & Ryan — you guys are the real MVPs.

Catch up on our other #LiveCivilBHM spotlights here. Happy Black History Month!
