Oprah Signs Multi-Year Partnership With Apple & Here’s What You Should Know About It

In case you missed it, Apple recently took to their website to announce a multi-year content partnership with Oprah Winfrey. The tech giant and media mogul will create original content that will be released as part of a lineup from Apple. “Together, Winfrey and Apple will create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world,” says their official website.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pact includes everything from film, TV, applications, books, and other content that could easily be distributed on Apple’s all-encompassing platform. However, the deal does not include podcasts, as Oprah has her own platform for that. Oprah will continue to serve as the chairman and CEO of the Discovery Communications-backed cable network, OWN. In December, Discovery reportedly paid Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo, Inc. $70 million to acquire an additional 24.5% stake in OWN, the companies’ joint venture.

Although Apple has shared no additional details regarding the deal, it has been said that Oprah’s Harpo Films will own any and all content produced under the Apple partnership.

Apple’s Head of Diversity, Denise Young Smith is Leaving The Company For A New Position.

The vice president of diversity and inclusion at Apple, Denise Young Smith, is leaving her position at the end of the year, and is moving to Cornell Tech to become its new executive-in-residence, as per a post on Cornell Tech’s website, as of January 2018.

While there are few details yet or a comment from Young Smith; the departure follows a recent controversy over remarks she made at a conference earlier this year.

During a panel session on racial injustice held in Bogota, Columbia;  Young Smith said that she focuses on everyone as Apple’s diversity chief.

“Diversity is the human experience. I get a little bit frustrated when diversity or the term diversity is tagged to the people of color, or the women, or the LGBT,” she said on the panel as reported by Quartz.

Her next comments are what some took issue with. “There can be 12 white, blue-eyed, blonde men in a room and they’re going to be diverse too because they’re going to bring a different life experience and life perspective to the conversation.

Apple recently released its annual diversity report, showing where it’s made progress on hiring minorities and women. It has only nudged up the proportion of female leadership by one percentage point to 29%. The percentage of black, multiracial, and Hispanic employees in leadership roles did not change, while the proportion of Asians at the top was up to 23%, from 21% the prior year.

“Meaningful change takes time,” the company said in its report. “We’re proud of our accomplishments, but we have much more work to do.”

Apple and Thurgood Marshall Fund Launch Scholars Program for HBCU Students

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund partnered with technological powerhouse Apple to create one of the most comprehensive scholarship efforts in HBCU history. Together the two organizations will award thirty scholarships to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Predominately Black Institutions (PBI). 

In addition to financial support scholars will receive  year-long mentorships by Apple employees and a paid internship at Apple headquarters next summer. Students will also serve as Apple Ambassadrs on their respective HBCU campuses and participate in post-graduation career development programs. 

“This program is about exposing gifted students from HBCU’s to a career in technology. We’re big believers that innovation will be strongest when talented people from diverse backgrounds are part of the creative process,” said Denise Young Smith, Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide Human Resources. “That’s why we’re so proud to be partnering with TMCF to help us find the next generation of innovators.”

CEO of Burberry Angela Ahrendts, Joins Apple As Only Female Executive

Among the many recent announcements made by Apple, from the new devices, software and product line (5C), this news may come as a bit of a surprise. Joining Tim Cooks Executive C-Suite as the first woman on-board, Angela Ahrendts has left her post as CEO of Burberry to become the new Head of Retail for Apple’s online and in-store shopping experience.

At first glance this might not seem like a logical choice, but when considering Apple’s desire to transition from tech giant to high end luxury brand, it makes perfect sense. A bit of background, while at Burberry, Ahrendts took a 150 year fashion house who’s name had been severely diluted and became the lead of the team responsible for tripling revenue to $3 Billion and creating a stock return of 300%.

These are the types of numbers that Angela has behind her, but she’ll definitely have her work cut out for her once she steps into this new role. There’s also the female demographic that Ahrendts will be able to realize and cater to within new Apple retail procedures. “They’ve brought in someone who doesn’t think like an electronics retailer,” said Kathy Gersch, executive vice president at leadership consultancy Kotter International. “When the Apple store was developed, it was outside of the box. They have to keep evolving that experience or it gets stale.”

Windows Offers Cash For Apple Trade-Ins, Should Apple Be Concerned?

Since the release of Apple’s latest devices the iPhone 5S and 5C, media outlets and consumers alike have been expressing their discontent with the lack of readily apparent changes in headset capability for the last three releases. The popular opinion is that Apple has released the same phone for the past 4 years since the debut of the iphone 4, the last big change. And with the amount of bugs still being worked out in the new iOS 7, this latest release almost proven to be an achilles heel for the mega brand.

Enter Windows. Capitalizing on the expressed discontent, Microsoft has decided to offer Apple users a way out. Now until November 3, you can trade in your used iphone 4S, 5, or ipad and get a MINIMUM of $200 for use on Microsoft products. Offering a minimum of $200 is a big move seeing as AT&T and the other major retailers MAX OUT at around $225. Apple To Debut New iPhone 5s and Potential iPhone 5c September 10

After much speculation and anticipation, Apple insider, Ina Fried of AllThingsD, broke the news that the next generation Apple announcement will be made next month on September 10.

As of now not many specifics are known about the new release however many people are referring to this version as the 5S with rumors of less expensive device called the iPhone 5C. With the announcement being made on the 10th, keeping in line Apple’s traditional release schedule we should see the new devices shipping by the 20th. This also means the final and official version of iOS 7 shortly before in order to allow time between the new software and new device.

Instagram Releases Update And Will NOT Be Outdone By Vine

Social media giant, and leader of the photo sharing movement, Instagram has recently added a new feature to their wildly popular mobile app.

After the release and rise in popularity of newcomer Vine, Instagram has decided to add video sharing to their list of features. Announced today on their blog, Instagram outlines that users will now be able to share up to 15 seconds of video to their respective tinelines. In addition to the 9 more seconds than Vine, you will also be able to use 13 all NEW, video-specific filters for your posts, and because of their platform’s already existing integration you’ll still be able to share to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Email, FLickr and Foursquare.

Another feature that’s in the new Instagram that’s lacking from Vine is the cinema feature. If you own an iPhone 4s or 5, you’ll be able to take videos with the help of a built in stabilizer to keep from making your videos too shaky and distracting!

Very strategic move by Instagram who’s clearly looking to keep a choke hold on the competition; a few questions are now raised though. Will Instagram users accept or reject the new feature? How will Vine compete or will they even have to? Apple Announces All New Look of iOS7 At Today’s WWDC

When Apple debuted the iphone 4 almost 3 years ago we were all overcome with excitement about how much had changed between the 3Gs and the 4. Today was WWDC 2013 and unlike with the 4S and the 5, Apple is again bringing us a serious overhaul to the device that over 75 Million of us know and love.

At today’s WWDC (Worldwide Developer Conference) Apple rolled out a bunch of new changes to the shiny and beautiful iOS that’s pretty much been the same since it’s debut in 2007. The first is that it’s no longer “shiny” and new. In an attempt to keep up with changing trends in the mobile market Apple is doing away with the glossy round look of the they’re signature operating system. All icons are now “flat” and will fit the more flat and subtle theme that’s going to be the “new look”. Listed below are some key areas where we’ll see the most change:

MultitaskingWhen you click the home button twice currently, it pulls up a small scroll bar at the bottom of your screen that allows you to see icons for all of the apps you’ve recently used. In the new iOS7 the multitasking option will allow you to scroll through screen previews of the apps you have open; a feature similar to that which we’ve already seen on Macbooks.

Camera: In the new camera app not only do you have the option of video, still and panorama, Apple has added the ability to add filters to your photo right from the app, and capture square photos making transitioning them to instagram that much easier.

iTunes Radio: With the chokehold that Pandora has had on the streaming radio industry Apple is looking to grab their piece of the market share by introducing iTunes Radio. This new ad-based radio will be similar in the sense that you create the stations and they become more tailored to your tastes the more you listen.
