15 Inspiring Quotes From Aaliyah on The 15th Anniversary of Her Death

By Posted on 62 3 m read

It was 15 years ago today when the world lost iconic singer Aaliyah in a tragic plane crash.

The fallen star was already a success story prior to her passing, but she was destined for so much more than she got to experience. Luckily for us, the legendary artist left us with much to be thankful for through her music, but more so her words and wisdom.

Not only was Aaliyah inspiring to the music industry and those hoping to become artists themselves, she also motivated and empowered women everywhere. Realistically, if you were listening to her music or her interviews at any point, inspiration was delivered.

While there was likely so much more the world could’ve learned from Aaliyah, we’re thankful that she gave us as many gems as she did while she was here.

To honor the beautiful singer on the 15th anniversary of her death, we wanted to highlight 15 of her most inspiring quotes in an effort to keep her name alive and her wisdom present.

See our list on the pages below and be sure to add your favorites in the comment section. Rest in Peace Aaliyah.

“I stay true to myself and my style, and I am always pushing myself to be aware of that and be original.”

“I know that people think I’m sexy and I am looked at as that. It is cool with me. It’s wonderful to have sexy appeal. If you embrace it, it can be a very beautiful thing.”

I want people to remember me as a full on entertainer and a good person.

Hol’ Up! Miami Rapper 5ive Star “Pays Homage” to Nicki Minaj

By Posted on 98 1 m read

I can’t decide how I feel about this one so I’ll leave it here for you guys to discuss among yourselves. Miami based rapper 5ive Star has taken it upon himself to come up with a tribute track dedicated to our favorite, reigning femcee, Nicki Minaj!

If you haven’t heard of 5ive Star its okay, before today we hadn’t either! His style is described as mixing the rock and soul of Prince, aggression of Notorious B. I. G. and smooth R&B tone of Aaliyah…I’m really trying hard not to lead y’all with this one but it really writes itself. What I can say is that the video teaser looks like a solid effort, and very Nicki-esque, and we love things that are what they say they are. The full song will be available for download on itunes January 21st, and the full video to premier on VEVO February 5th. Pretty legit so far, we’ll see where this one goes!

Obsession or Affection? Has Drakes Love for Aaliyah Gone too Far?

By Posted on 56 3 m read

Most musicians find an artist that they relate to and that they pay homage to; someone that they latch on to musically and find inspiration in. Recently Drake has signed on to do the next aaliyah project which prompts the question is this an obsession or just an artist wanting to pay homage.

This seems to be a case of obsession for a person who has never met Aaliyah Drake has put her career (posthumous) in his hands and it’s so far off to a bad start. The song that was released Sunday seems as if it was forced; Bad vocals, Average beat and what you expect from drake but the biggest problem in all of it is this song isn’t what we would have gotten from Aaliyah. It’s one thing to have your own mind about what an artist would want it’s another thing to change the format and sound to benefit you and your current movement. Aaliyah would have given us a dance track something with some pop to start off buzz for her album but instead we get a Marvin room sounding song.   The record was more about Drake than it was about eulogizing Aaliyah. Why else would he release it on the same day as his festival, if not but to bring more attention to himself? Drake could have easily waited a few weeks until the anniversary of Aaliyah’s death (August 25th) and released it then. This may be the perfect case of if it isn’t broken don’t try and fix it.

There’s also the issue of the Aaliyah Tattoo Drake has . It’s so borderline crazy that it takes away from how beautiful the tribute would be if he actually knew her. Maybe I’m wrong in my theory that he’s obsessed. Maybe Drake is just a passionate fan looking to show his love for someone that he admired as a child. But it all seems crazy the back tattoo, The Aaliyah earpiece for performances and the wanting to be the ghost whisperer for her career all make Drake seem a bit “stanish”.

But all of my theories of Drake seem to change when I read the letter that he wrote for her.

“Dear Dana,

I’ve never lost a parent, a friend, or a lover but I will never forget this day for the rest of my life. I remember getting the news that you had passed and it connected with my heart like a clean shot from Muhammad Ali. I was crushed. Not only was I one of your biggest fans but I was truly in love with you. I loved the way you carried yourself, the way you dressed, the confidence with which you addressed passion and relationships in your music. I said to myself that even if we never met, I wanted a woman in my life just like you. I am pained that we will never get to connect now that music ended up being my career path. But you should know, we all listen to you everyday and we remain inspired and moved by all that you’ve given the world. I hope I make the right life choices so I can end up in heaven where I know you rest your head. I’ll continue to make music in your honor until the day we finally meet. Dinner’s on me!

Love you always and forever,

With something so beautiful it seems to show that drake is more than just a fan and that maybe he views her as more than a muse he sees her as the one person who seemed to understand his love for music and that maybe he just wants to be close to her now because he never had a chance to. My hope is that with everything Drake has done that he has somehow reached out to her family to approve of everything and help them.
