While many mother’s bask in a house full of love and laughter on Mother’s Day, Nelba Márquez-Greene wanted to recognize the mothers who do not get that honor due to acts of gun violence which took their children away.
Nelba is the mother of Ana Grace Márquez-Greene, one of the child victims of the Sandy Hook shooting in December 2012. Though it has been four years, the sorrow of losing her daughter has not lessened. That led to a Facebook open letter she penned for “Mothers With Empty Laps on Monther’s Day” on her “Remembering Ana Grace Márquez-Greene” page. Though young, Ana created a legacy inspiring her parents to create The Ana Grace Project to build healthier communities, prevent violence, and promote recovery.
It was nothing but pure courage for Nelba to let the world into her personal thoughts of losing one of their two children. Being able to have the strength to still encourage other family victims on such a significant day would be hard for anyone. Regardless, Nelba made it her duty not to encourage mother’s to “move on,” but to move forward using faith in Jesus and belief in their own strength.
“You are loved when you are angry, loved when you are sad, loved when you are struggling to make sense of why your child is gone. Jesus is with you and so am I.”
Young Ana is greatly missed by her family and friends. Thank you, Márquez-Greene Family for your hard work in promoting the physical and emotional well-being of your community.
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the strong, warrior mothers of the world.
