Over the weekend, I was finally able to set aside time away from the busy holiday schedule to watch one of the most talked about Netflix films. After constantly being asked, “Have you seen the new Bird Box movie on Netflix?” and countless social media memes to which I could not relate to or yet understand, I knew I had to see this movie.
Whether you thought the movie was great or totally disagreed with all of the hype, it was watched by over 45 million Netflix accounts, which turned out to be a major hit for the streaming service. According to Netflix, Bird Box was watched by 45,037,125 accounts in its opening week. It’s the first time Netflix has shared a concrete number for any streaming content, according to Forbes.

Bird Box, which stars Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, Rosa Salazar, Jacki Weaver, and Lil Rel Howery, was directed by Susanne Bier and based on the novel by Josh Malerman. According to the film synopsis, it tells the story of a mysterious force that decimates the population through vision. If you see it, you die. The survivors must now avoid coming face to face with an entity that takes the form of their worst fears. Searching for hope and a new beginning, a woman (Sandra Bullock) and her children embark on a dangerous journey through the woods and down a river to find the one place that may offer sanctuary. To make it, they’ll have to cover their eyes from the evil that chases them and complete the trip blindfolded.
