The Nigerian bobsled team makes history before the 2018 Winter Olympic games begin. The women’s bobsled team will be the first team representing Nigeria, during the winter games, taking place in Pyeongchang, South Korea, February 2018. The women are the first Nigerian team, male or female, to qualify for the Winter Olympic games.
Akuoma Omeoga, Seun Adigun and Ngozi Onwumere are the Nigerian women who compose the historical bobsled team which formed in 2016. The team competed in five bobsled races to qualify for the Olympic games. Their representation of Nigeria in South Korea will be the first of its kind.
Adigun, who competed in the 100 meter hurdles during the summer Olympics hopes their feat inspires the community and paves the way for more winter sports to take place in Nigeria. “Our objective now is to be the best representation of Africa that the Winter Olympics have ever witnessed” says Adigun, reported by Newsweek.
Adigun informed CBC the team trained for the Olympics with a sled built on their own from wood purchased from a hardware store.
