Netflix has unveiled the official title and premiere date for their previously announced C.J. Walker project. It will be starring Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer who plays Sarah Breedlove, known as Madam C.J. Walker. Netflix also released the first look at Spencer as the iconic figure in history.
Madam C.J. Walker is America’s first black, female self-made millionaire who overcame various obstacles leading up to becoming a black hair care pioneer. Through her journey to success, Walker experienced racial and gender discrimination, toxic marriages, and family challenges. Not only is she rememberer for her groundbreaking black haircare revolutions, but also her dedication to social change.
Self Made also stars Blair Underwood as her husband C.J. Walker, Tiffany Haddish as her daughter Lelia, Carmen Ejogo as Walker’s business rival Addie Munroe, Garrett Morris as Walker’s father-in-law, Kevin Carroll as her longtime lawyer Freeman Ransom and Bill Bellamy as Ransom’s cousin Sweetness.
The series is inspired by the book, On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles. ‘Self Made: Inspired By The Life Of Madam C.J. Walker’ will be released in a 4-part series limited series and will debut on the streaming platform March 20.
