This week Bidhya Devi Bhandari, 54, made history when she was elected as the first female President of Napal. With her election not only is Bhandari the first female president, she is also the second person to be elected since their monarch was abolished in 2008.
According to the Associated Press this historic election is proof that Napal is working diligently to ensure that women aren’t just limited to certain types of jobs. Also, it encourages women to serve in leadership roles in a government that equally impacts them.
“Bhandari said her election — by a vote of 327-214 against Congress party leader Kul Bahadur Gurung — marked a first step toward assuring the new constitutional guarantees of equality are fulfilled.”
