It looks like Netflix and Dee Rees are teaming up once again for a brand new project.
The Mudbound director will oversee an adaptation of Joan Didion’s 1996 political thriller, The Last Thing He Wanted, which will star Anne Hathaway. After Netflix’s distribution of Rees’ critically-acclaimed Oscar-nominated film Mudbound, it only makes sense for the two to collaborate yet again.
The film, which was co-written by Dee Rees and Marco Villalobos, centers on a Washington Post journalist (Anne Hathaway) who gets thrown into the dangerous world of arms dealing by a covert government operation.
Rees expressed her excitement to interpret one of her favorite Joan Didion novels saying, “This work is one of my favorite Joan Didion novels and is a brilliant and layered piece of fiction. I am forever attracted to interesting, unexpected characters and Didion is one of the greatest masters of the form. I’m so excited to be able to interpret this literary masterpiece.”
According to Netflix film group head Scott Stuber, the streaming company is extremely thrilled about continuing their relationship with Dee and having her as a member of the Netflix family.
“Dee Rees is an incredibly talented filmmaker, who continues to make provocative and entertaining films. We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Dee and proud to have her part of the Netflix family,” he says.
There is no expected release date or additional cast announcements as of yet.
Dee Rees will produce The Last Thing He Wanted alongside Cassian Elwes.
