On Sunday (March 29) our timelines were flooded with amazing women of color as they gathered for the annual Black Girls Rock Award Show. This year, among the attendees was our very own first lady, Michelle Obama and there’s no doubt that she is a black girl and she certainly rocks.
Each year the organization recognizes inspiring black women that serve as positive images and figures in out nation. Mrs. Obama graced our twitter and instagram accounts in a white form-fitting Zac Posen corset dress. Video footage has surfaced of Mrs. Obama’s powerful speech for young women of color around the world where she proudly declares, “Black girls rock!”
“I am so excited to be here at Black Girls Rock! To all the young women here tonight and all across the country, let me say those words again. Black girls rock! We rock!
No matter where you come from, you are beautiful. You are powerful. You are funny. Let me tell you I am so proud of you. My husband, your president, is so proud of you. And we have such big hopes and dreams for every single one of you. I know that’s not always the message you get from the world. I know there are voices that tell you have to look a certain way—act a certain way. That if you speak up you’re too loud. If you step up to lead, you’re being bossy.”
Check out the video above and be sure to watch Black Girls Rock! 2015 Award Show this Sunday, April 5, 2015 at 7P/6C.
