I recently read an article published on Teen Vogue about popular beauty influencer Jackie Aina speaking on the lack of nude makeup available to dark-skinned women. In the video titled “Trying Nude Makeup… But What IS Nude?!,” Aina demonstrated, with a variety of swatches, just how exclusive makeup can be to women of darker skin tones as every product that she tried ended up coming back to the same beige, peachy or light color that we all know as nude. I totally agree with the sentiment of writer Scarlett Newman of Teen Vogue when she says “we like to think of makeup as one size fits all, but there are still areas where brands aren’t considering the needs of their consumers with darker skin.”
The latest brand to offer inclusivity to all shades is M.A.C. Cosmetics. The brand states that they’ve made it their mission to create a diverse, inclusive collection of neutrals for each and every skin tone by unveiling 24 new nude lip shades for all ages, races, and genders.
“With the largest-ever range of neutral Lipsticks, Lip Pencils and Lipglasses, reveal every shade of you with nude for every mood,” reads MACCosmetics.com. “Embrace all your shades and explore by your skin tone to find the nude (or two) for you. Create different lip looks – from barely there to bold – by choosing a lip wardrobe to reflect what makes you uniquely you.”
