At 17, Maame Biney has her eyes set on making history and spreading her black girl magic. She has become the first black woman to qualify for the U.S Winter Olympics speedskating team.
“I can’t believe it, aww geez,” she said after her victory. “It’s a really good feeling, but it has to set in first because it takes me a while. I’m like, ‘Holy cow.’”
The Ghana native won two women’s 500 meter short-track speedskating trials earlier this week, which puts her in the running to be the second black speedskater to ever be on the U.S Olympic Team.
Biney’s father was seen cheering his baby girl on in the crowd, holding a sign that said “Kick some hiney Biney!”
The 2018 Winter Olympics will take place from February 9th-25th, 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
