Lupita Nyong’o has starred in some of Hollywood’s top films, dazzled red carpets and slayed magazine covers and now, the actress plans to conquor children’s literature. Nyong’o announces her childrens book Sulwe will be an adventurous tale of life lessons anyone can enjoy.

The books main character Sulwe is a dark skinned girl who at the age of five takes off on an adventure. Sulwe, which translates to “star” in Nyong’o’s native Kenyan tongue, grows up in a household where her darker skin tone makes her self conscious and she takes off to the sky in search of a lighter skin tone. On her adventure, Sulwe learns the value of seeing her own beauty through a brand new lense.

Sulwe’s quest for lighter skin was motivated by Nyongo’s own childhood struggles with her complexion. With her celebrity platform Lupita Nyong’o has been vocal about diversity and inclusivity in all industries and understands the importance of teaching these lessons at a young age.  Nyong’o even visited Sesame Street where she spoke with Elmo about embracing her dark skin tone and celebrating the beauty in others.

Sulwe to be published by Simon & Schuster is set to release January 2019.
