Live Civil: What motivates you on days you feel like quitting?
Olori Swank: When it comes to what keeps me motivated, I can categorize my list into two things. The first is my faith in God. I’m insanely obsessed with the bible verse Jeremiah 29:11 that states: ‘”For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'” Whenever I’m feeling down and I’m at my wits end I always reflect back on this scripture. I truly believe that God’s plan for me is better than my own and if something isn’t going my way, then it’s probably not the way God wanted it to happen. So instead of quitting, I go back to the drawing board and figure out another way to achieve my goal.
The second thing that keeps me motivated is having a positive attitude. I’ve learned to see the beauty in everything. My mind is trained so well that I’ve noticed I actually find it quite difficult to use the word “ugly.” This positive attitude helps me focus on every good thing that has happened in my life so far and the awesome things I can accomplish if I just stick with the task at hand. I also reflect back on past accomplishments and acknowledge the fact that the task wasn’t easy, I just got better; and you only get better by sticking with it.
Quitters never win and winners never quit. If you’re having a hard time staying motivated, start a blessings jar. I can’t tell you the number of times a surge of new motivation has come over me after opening the jar and reading my many small and big victories.
