‘Left of Black’ Talk Leadership in the Black Community Through the Years

By Posted on 0 1 m read

Left of Black is a weekly podcast dedicated to talking about the movements of black culture.

This week’s episode was a discussion on the difference between leaders and leadership throughout history. Host Mark Anthony Neal of Duke University sat with Natanya Duncan who explained the main distinction between the UNIA era and the current Black Lives Matter Movement is that there is no specific spokesperson.

“Since the assassination of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, there has been this idea of a gap and people are waiting for the next deliverer to come. If we listen to Angela Davis…you understand we have to save ourselves…And that’s why Black Lives Matter is supposedly leaderless because they can’t put a man on the front page of ‘The New York Times’ and say ‘It’s him.'”

Listen to Natanya shed light on how a unity of different people with a common goal can work together below.
