As the world took to social media to share reactions to Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover, Laverne Cox took to her Tumblr to applaud Jenner for her admirable courage to discuss such an overlooked subject.
Cox begins the post by reminiscing on her own cover story on Time that focused on the “Transgender Tipping Point” sparking a conversation that was (and still is) often swept under the rug and ignored. The post continues with endless praise for Jenner’s ability to discuss a topic that is extremely personal sharing, “Yes, Caitlyn looks amazing and is beautiful but what I think is most beautiful about her is her heart and soul, the ways she has allowed the world into her vulnerabilities. . . Her courage to move past denial into her truth so publicly. These things are beyond beautiful to me.”
Over the last couple years Cox has strategically used her platform and Hollywood exposure to bring light to issues that effect the transgender community. On numerous occasions she has shared that she hopes to, “… inspire, move and encourage folks to think more critically about the world around them.”
The post concludes with a call to action.
“I have hoped over the past few years that the incredible love I have received from the public can translate to the lives of all trans folks. Trans folks of all races, gender expressions, ability, sexual orientations, classes, immigration status, employment status, transition status, genital status etc.. I hope, as I know Caitlyn does, that the love she is receiving can translate into changing hearts and minds about who all trans people are as well as shifting public policies to fully support the lives and well being of all of us. The struggle continues…”
