Karen Civil teamed with Adidas to bring the first ever Live Civil Basketball Camp to her hometown of Elizabeth, New Jersey. The basketball camp was a part of Live Civil Day 2017. The inaugural experience was hosted by Mouse Jones and aligned with the goals of #LiveCivilDay to encourage youth to stay fit, active and motivated through the duration of the summer.
Three local basketball organizations, which compiled 100 kids, were gifted customized Adidas basketball uniforms, t-shirts, sneakers, book bags, Beats by Dre Power Beats and months’ supply of Gatorade. Attendees were gifted with Adidas sack packs, sneakers and t-shirts at the Mickey Walker Recreational Center.
Joining Karen Civil at the event was fellow Jersey native and forward for the San Antonio Spurs, Kyle Anderson, who assisted in coaching, sharing the importance of staying healthy and the pursuit of your passions.
“Growing up my dad took me to a lot of events and I always enjoyed them, so giving back and supporting events now is only right,” Anderson shared. “It’s extra special when it’s the home state too.”
Five lucky children were given the opportunity to compete in a half-court shot contest and were joined by another Jersey native, Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving, who gave the winner a signed game jersey.
Civil, along with assistance from her team, was able to bridge the separation gap in the youth of her hometown by uniting a variety of organizations that represent the city’s diverse culture. Guests of the event came together to watch the Khaseem Greene Dream Team, S.O.A.R. Program and Rich Tabor’s New Life Basketball Team go head-to-head and hear an empowering speech from Civil highlighting non-traditional career options and expand the knowledge of the city’s youth.
“Live Civil Day represents community, positivity, encouragement, health, and wellness. As an Elizabeth Native, I believe it is my duty to give back to my community. Our youth is our future and it truly takes a village to raise a child. I want children to know that they can create the life they dream of despite the odds that are against them,” stated Karen Civil who was surprised with the key to the city on behalf of the city of Elizabeth for all of her accomplishments.
