We’ve had our eye on Ms. Jhene Aiko for quite some time now. I mean, since here B2K affiliated days (Remember them?). However, Jhene has been receiving quite a bit more buzz all on her own recently and we’re all about it.
Jhene released her mixtape Sailing Souls at the top of last year (another R&B artist that has benefitted from the success of a mixtape) and once again became a signed artist with No I.D. and Def jam before the close of 2011. Some of the features included Miguel and Kanye West, and even a production visit from Bei Major on our favorite track “You vs. Them”.
Fast forward to 2012 and Jhene has released an official single and video, “3:16 am”, from her forthcoming album Souled Out and this past week, a follow-up track and video for “Mirrors”. If you’re looking for a little bit more depth from artists you support, rather than all the lights, bells and whistles of ridiculously famous, pre-packaged pop acts then you’ll find something special in Jhene Aiko.
The production on her songs is notoriously understated and raw, playing background to her feathery but intricate vocals. Jhene also scores big in writing department, as her lyrics speak of love and love lost as vividly as being able to see Frank Ocean’s sleeve rip as he falls from a rooftop in “Super Rich Kids”. Jhene is solid in all apsects and gives you the emotional connection that’s lacking from todays music, all without needing a reality show to do so. Souled Out is scheduled for a 2013 release, 3:16 am is available on itunes RIGHT NOW and check out her video for “Mirrors” below.
