When we reflect on the black girl domination of 2017, Issa Rae, is one of the first names that will come up on everyone’s list. In between racking up two Golden Globe nominations and working on three new shows, including a third season of Insecure, Rae still finds the humor in her new found fame. While on the Jimmy Fallon show, she shared about how when she is spotted out in public fans are more likely to tell her “You know you look like that girl Issa Rae,” instead of assuming it’s really her.
When Fallon asked if the writer was excited to return to the Golden Globe Awards this year, she reluctantly replied, “Yeah, if I get food this time,” noting that the ceremony serves dinner ridiculously early. Rae is nominated for “Best Performance By An Actress In A Television Series” for her role on the HBO show.
One of Issa’s more well known supporters are the Obamas and she speaks on that she was invited to visit the White House around the same time last year and stated that she’ll “never be back”. She shared that Michelle Obama revealed that she was a big fan after her daughters had put her on to the show, although she was disappointed by the first season’s finale. It was then that Rae questioned if Sasha in particular was a little too young for some of the show’s R-rated content:
“She told me that Sasha and Malia put her on to the show which was amazing. And I was like, ‘Wait, Sasha’s like mad young though. I don’t think she should be watching it.”
Issa Rae also talked about how her and Tiffany Haddish are waiting for Michelle Obama to make good on her invitation to have them over to that they can cook for them.
“We invited ourselves to cook for them. Well, Tiffany said she would cook — I would just bring the drinks. And Michelle was like ‘Yeah, come through to Chicago!’ So we’re just waiting on you, Michelle.”
