If you weren’t too thrilled to hear that BET would be rebooting the classic romantic comedy film ‘Boomerang’, that is sure to change as it has been announced that Halle Berry, who starred in the original film as Eddie Murphy’s love interest Angela, and powerhouse producer and screenwriter Lena Waithe have signed on to co-executive produce the BET and Paramount Television project.
The reboot will be broken down into a 10-episode series that centers on the modern-day children of Halle Berry and Eddie Murphy’s fictional characters, as well as the role of Jacqueline, who was previously played by Robin Givens.
“I’m thrilled to team up with Lena on this project as she is without a doubt a leading voice of her generation and a trailblazer in her own right,” Berry said in a statement. “I’m truly excited to be a part of bringing this iconic and beloved film to the small screen.”
As a culture, we often hold classic movies and sitcoms near and dear to our hearts. So, we can be very dismissive and stubborn to even the thought of a reboot or recreation of one of our favorites. However, Lena Waithe wants the ‘Boomerang’ series to be looked at as less of a reboot and more of a continuation of the 1992 film.
“This is less of a reboot and more of a continuation of the original story,” says Waithe. “There’s no point in trying to remake a classic. It can’t be done. So we want to create something fresh that speaks to a new generation. We hope people will come to the show with an open mind and ready to embrace the new world we’ve created!”
Waithe will co-write the pilot alongside showrunner Ben Cory Jones. A premiere date for ‘Boomerang’ has not yet been determined.
