Two clear representatives of #BlackGirlMagic have to be olympic superstars Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles. That’s why Teen Vogue decided to spotlight these two amazing women for their August 2016 issue.
Painting the picture of how impactful these two women are, Teen Vogue dove deep into Gabby and Simone’s life for their cover story, where both women talked about overcoming struggles, staying focused on what’s important, exceeding expectations and achieving and milestones, and not stopping until they’re at the top.
Here are some quotes from both ladies:
Gabby Douglas on fans’ love and support:
“I literally never thought I would ever have so many people behind me. It’s so special. I feel like I’m one of theirs, you know?” Gabby, 20, shares. “Sometimes I’m like, why are all those people taking pictures of that wall? And then I realize I am standing in front of it.”
Gabby Douglas on making it to the Olympics:
“It was just insane knowing that I had spent my whole life dreaming about this one specific goal and achieved it.”
Simone Biles on treating gymnastics as fun and not a job
“It’s never been a goal,” she says in her soft, almost childlike voice. “I take things one step at a time,” she says, “If I thought of gymnastics as a job, it would put too much stress on me,” she explains. “At the end of the day, if I can say I had fun, it was a good day.”
Simone Biles on being inspired by her U.S. teammates
“I look up to them. If I see Aly [Raisman] or Gabby [Douglas] doing something, I’m like, whoa,” Simone says. “They always motivate me.”.
