Not long ago we reported on a controversy brewing within the upper ranks of Essence Magazine, as it had just been learned that former Editor-In-Chief, Constance White, had been removed from her position due to disagreements with Essence’s parent company, Time Warner, as to what the focus of the magazine should be. Well the announcement was made, officially, yesterday that the new successor is award winning journalist, author, editor and long-time member of the Essence family, Vanessa K. Bush.
Bush joined Essence back in 2003 as Beauty and Fashion Features Editor, and has since gone on to function in roles varying from Lifestyle Editor all the way up to acting Editor-In-Chief around February of this year. In a letter to the readers announcing her acceptance of the new position, Vanessa addresses the Constance White/Time Warner issue indirectly with the following quote:
…I make this promise to you: ESSENCE will always be the place where Black women come first. There’s nothing I’m more passionate about than bringing you the best, because you deserve nothing less.
She then goes on to invite you all to a Google Hangout hosted by Essence where she will be fielding all of your questions, comments concerns and suggestions in the lane of how Essence can better meet your needs. The event time and date is August 9, next Friday at 12p EST. If you can’t make it then, you can always drop me a note at Vanessa@essence.com. We don’t know where exactly this new leadership is going to go but we’re holding out hope that Vanessa is serious about taking Essence onward and upward but with the same powerful voice and focus that makes the magazine a staple in our community. Cheers Vanessa!
