In a recent ‘Ellen’ interview, Dwyane Wade showed all parents how to unconditionally love their children. The NBA star shared that he and his wife, Gabrielle Union are proud parents of a queer child.
In December, Wade did an interview where he used she/her pronouns referring to the 12-year-old. And now, instead of the name “Zion,” she will be referred to as Zaya, as she comes into her identity.
“We take our roles and responsibilities as parents very seriously.” said Wade. “So, when our child comes home with a question, when our child comes home with an issue, when our child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that to give them the best information that we can, the best feedback that we can, and that doesn’t change now that sexuality [and gender] is involved.”
Dwyane and Gabrielle are not only supporting their child, but empowering her. In order to be fully educated on how to parent best, Union consulted with the cast of Pose for more information. The couple also are involved with GLSEN, an organization that fights discrimination, harassment and bullying against LGBTQ+ individuals.
“We just tried to figure out as much information as we can to help our child be her best self,” Wade said.
The interview was to promote a new ESPN documentary based on the basketball player, called D Wade: Life Unexpected, which airs Sunday, February 23.
