Following the success of this year’s Marvel film ‘Black Panther,’ which grossed $1.35 billion worldwide and even 2009’s animated film ‘The Princess and the Frog,’ which grossed $265 million worldwide, Disney has set their sights on the development of a new live-action project centered on an African princess.
‘Sadé’ is about a young African girl whose kingdom is threatened by a mysterious evil force and accepts her newly discovered magical powers to protect her people, with the help of the kingdom’s prince.
‘Dope’ director Rick Famuyiwa will produce the film alongside executive producer Scott Falconer, through their Verse production banner. Overseeing the project will be Tendo Nagenda and Zoe Kent. A director has yet to be named.
Disney purchased the pitch from Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer, who will co-write the screenplay.
