Disney Introduces First Latina Princess In New Animated Series ‘Elena of Avalor’

Race and ethnicity barriers are broken every day, and Disney just added a major one to their list. With the launch of their upcoming animated series Elena of Avalor, Disney will introduce their very first Latina princess, Elena.

The new series will focus on Elena and her various adventures. She’s described as being, “a brave and adventurous teenager who has saved her kingdom from an evil sorceress and must now learn to rule as crown princess until she is old enough to be queen,” according to Yahoo.

Elena of Avalor will be centered around Latin and Hispanic culture, diving into traditional food, music, dancing, customs and much more. Actress Aimee Carrero, the voice for Elena, makes it clear just how big of a role Elena will play in her family.

“She’s still underage so she’s not yet ready to rule and so she just has the challenge of taking care of her family and this huge kingdom and have this awesome responsibility,” Aimee says.

She continues, “What I love most about Elena is she’s her own hero. There’s no ‘Prince Charming,’ so I hope people at home watching will just be inspired her sense of self, her confidence and her leadership.”

The series will premiere on Friday, July 22nd at 7pm EST on Disney Channel.
