Actor Daniel Kaluuya will star in an upcoming film written by the creator of the Showtime drama series ‘The Chi’, Lena Waithe.
The film, titled ‘Queen & Slim’, centers on a black man and woman who go on the run after killing a cop in self-defense during their first date. According to Variety, the movie explores America’s social and political climate through the lens of a genre-defying love story. “To me, this is protest art,” said Waithe, who wrote the script based on an original idea and treatment from best-selling author James Frey. “It’s about being black and trying to fall in love in a world that’s burning down around you.”
Making her feature directing debut will be Melina Mastoukas, who is best known for her work on television series ‘Master of None’, ‘Insecure’, and Beyonce’s “Formation” video. “It’s a film that defines Black love as a revolutionary act. It shows that our union is the greatest weapon against the assault on Black people in America,” she said.
While it is clear that ‘Get Out’ Daniel Kaluuya has been selected to play Slim, it is unclear who will play the role of Queen. ‘Queen & Slim’ is scheduled for pre-production in October and filming will begin in January.
