This weekend (December 6) Cicely Tyson was awarded a Kennedy Center Honor for her commitment to the arts and contribution to American culture.
At the age of 90 the actress is still working diligently to increase African American representation in the entertainment industry.
“She turned down more roles than you could imagine because they didn’t lift or serve us as a people,” Tyler Perry said according to CBS News. “For six decades, she has been diligent in her pursuit to better us all.”
“I am still in shock,” said Tyson shared on receiving the award. “I consider this tantamount to being honored by the queen.”
