For their annual Hollywood March issue, Chris Rock graces the cover of ESSENCE Magazine for the 1st time ever.
With all of the controversy surrounding the upcoming Oscar’s, Chris, as the host, has a lot on his mind. For the cover story that was conducted prior to the #OscarsSoWhite outrage, Rock discusses the diversity issue and acknowledges things could turn left at the big show.
“It could go horribly wrong. Don’t ever think that it can’t,” Rock tells ESSENCE. “That’s when it goes wrong—when you don’t think there’s any chance of it going wrong. If you know it won’t, it probably won’t.”
Rock also discusses the difficulties for black actresses in particular noting the trials and tribulations they very much face. He says, “I’ve never done a movie, any movie, the silliest movie, where someone, some studio person hasn’t gone, ‘Does the girl have to be Black?’ It happens every time.”
He continues, “Black women get paid less than everybody in Hollywood. Everybody’s talking about Jennifer Lawrence. Talk to Gabrielle Union. If you want to hear stories, talk to Nia Long. Talk to Kerry Washington. They would love to get to Jennifer Lawrence’s place, or just be treated with the same amount of respect.”
We’re excited for the upcoming Oscar’s, to say the least. Read the rest of the cover story here and grab a copy of this issue of ESSENCE when it hits newsstands on February 12th.
