#CivilChat A Conversation with ‘her sweat’ Co-Founders Adelle Platon & Niki McGloster

By Posted on 76 5 m read

‘her sweat.’ is a digital platform that seeks to highlight health and fitness from a woman’s perspective. Why was it created? “Because we can” says co founders Niki McGloster and Adelle Platon. Its “the perfect hub for women who love the sweet trifecta of sports, fitness and lifestyle….”

Today, via twitter, Live Civil had the opportunity to dive into a meaningful conversation. The co-founders discussed everything from how they came up with the idea of ‘her sweat’, to what motivates them as individuals, to continuing working together.

If you missed Live Civil’s #CivilChat with @hersweat, head over to @hersweat + @livecivil‘s official twitter pages to see what went down.

How did the idea of ‘her sweat.’ come about? What inspired you both (Adelle & Niki) to join forces in bringing this company to life?

we came up with the idea while working at together. tbh, we just wanted to create a pop culture-infused digital space for young boss women actively pursuing a healthier lifestyle to learn and be able to relate. nothing stuffy or too clinical – just real.

s/o to for pushing us to really do it!

What do you wish you knew before you first started building ‘her sweat.’?

everything! lol, so much is learned through trial and error tho. we’ve learned a ton from our individual careers (writing, on-air talent, hosting, etc.), like managing biz relationships, learning graphic design and tackling legal. we’ve handled the learning curve well.

Two women working under the same roof. How do you both manage to stay motivated & continue working together?

we secretly hate each other. can’t you tell? sike, no! we’re friends first, then we balance one another quite effortlessly in biz. if one of us is out of pocket for any particular reason, the other hops in and takes the reins.

+we both want to create change through our co., so we’re equally invested. this is our baby frfr and we’re damn good at co-parenting.

What frustrates you most as a business owner/fitness enthusiast? How do you balance the two?

it’s hard not to fall back into old unhealthy habits. as biz owners/entrepreneurs who have our own separate endeavors, it’s tough not to guzzle champagne or skip one (or three!) week of gym sessions. but you gotta walk it like you talk it. period.

+it’s not so much that’s it’s frustrating but it definitely requires discipline. we hold each other accountable too, which is what is about – having a friend to keep you in check.

How does maintaining a consistent fitness routine in your personal life improve your perfroamnces as the faces behind ‘her sweat.’

making healthy choices consistently really helps us learn what other women are dealing with in this space, which helps us connect to the community we want to build. it allows us to stay aware of trends, how to cover health and to be inclusive, too.

I imagine running a company is not as easy as it sounds, when you’re not going over logistics for the company, what does self care look like for Niki & Adelle?

. will disconnect from social media quick! that’s the best self-care for her – just to be still & live in the moment. loves to tackle any type of adventure but finds her “me time” by unplugging, getting a massage & practicing mindfulness.

What kind go culture exists within ‘her sweat.’? How did you establish it? How do you continue to maintain that environment?

tbh, we’re still building the culture. but we would like it to be an ever-growing community of women of all backgrounds nurturing one another & being kind to their bodies while also stepping up to create change through community initiatives.

+whether it’s participating in blood cancer awareness drives, running for causes, and developing a real movement toward healthy living for all.

You’ve interviewed everyone from Jeanette Jenkins, to Broadcast Journalist Cari Champion, & dancer (for Beyonce) Quinny Wilmington — What was the process like when landing those collabs?

aw man. these were some of our first interviews, and we tapped them bc of their work and personal stories. we knew their experiences would be inspo and helpful to our audience…

+thankfully we’ve fostered some really great relationships in our industries, so we look forward to bringing y’all more content like this.

How are you applying what’s happening in the industry to building your brand? For example, social media is replacing websites and how brands market themselves. How are you able to adjust to the growing industry?

great question! we started out wanting to provide written coverage of the health/fitness world, but we’ve had to pivot to utilize more video, rework our marketing strategies toward more in-person opportunities and lean more heavily on our social media sphere.

+it’s been interesting to say the least but the change has undoubtedly worked in our favor. our site is still in the works but you’ll certainly see more original content on our social channels in the new year.

What are some of your favorite parts about being co founders for ‘her sweat.’ specifically? Do you have least favorites?

the best part is that we get to do this together (*cue the “awww”*)! and ya know, so many of our peers and even people we don’t know support us every single day. that’s love. least favorite part? can’t say we have one. rn we’re enjoying all the highs and growing pains.

What advice would you give to those interested in becoming not just business owners, but fitness entrepreneurs?

do your homework, utilize your network and live this life. you can’t be a fitness entrepreneur without knowing your industry, so learn a little more every day.

How can those interested in learning more stay in touch with ‘her sweat?’? Niki? Adelle?

well, certainly follow us at on all social channels. re-launch party coming in Q1 (😉) and we’re announcing some major opportunities before the end of the month!

+our newsletter sign-ups start next week, too, which will include lil messages from us to keep women encouraged and also events, by us and our fav fit friends, that we feel you should attend. be prepared to see a LOT of next year.

Here are some of the questions from our viewers…

Stanger Things Star Millie Bobby Brown Deletes Twitter After Being Cyber Bullied

By Posted on 0 1 m read

“Stranger Things” actress Millie Bobby Brown has deleted her Twitter account after becoming the target to some homophobic and hurtful cyber bullying.

Mashable reports that this appears to have started in November 2017 when @KelsFiona said the 14-year-old snatched her hijab at the airport. It was obviously fake — when another Twitter user pointed out that she doesn’t have a hijab on in her profile picture, @KelsFiona said, “because she ripped it off me.”

@KelsFiona account was suspended and the tweet was deleted, however, it did not stop there, memes and fake snap chat stories about Brown being homophobic were created and #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown was born.

While some basked in the delight of the memes resurfacing others did not. In fact many Twitter users showed their support for Millie, who does nothing but spread messages of positivity. Although she has yet to release a statement, Mille did post a picture on her Instagram story with the caption “Good Vibes Only.”

Aisha Mohamed Adds Black Girl Magic To Classic Van Gogh Paintings

By Posted on 75 1 m read

London artist Aisha Mohamed takes classic art and envisions them with black women instead of the European silhouettes originally painted. The 22 year old digital artist tweeted images of her interpretations and they were a hit to people across the world.

During an interview with Buzzfeed, Mohamed explains the concept and the importance of the artwork.

“I couldn’t help but notice that I never saw myself reflected in any of my favourite pieces. It was an isolating feeling. In a way, this piece was about reclaiming this very white space and saying, ‘We’re here and we’re beautiful.” she says.

Her first piece was an image of Aya Jones and after it was finished, Mohamed was still unsure about the entire project.

“It was the first one I did, and at the time I was still very unsure about the concept and where I was going with it…After making it, I knew I had to make a collection. There was something so striking about it and I wanted to recapture it as many times as I could.”

Mohamed who now sells her artwork continues to create art where black women are featured as beautiful.  Keep up with with the artist on Twitter .

Twitter Is Making Changes To Their 140 Character Limit Sooner Than You Think

By Posted on 0 1 m read

Back in May, reports surfaced of popular social media site Twitter’s plan to change up which pieces of content count towards their well-known 140-character limit.

Well, according to The Verge, starting on September 19th, media attachments including pictures, gifs, videos, polls, etc., as well as their newer feature Quoted Tweets, will no longer count towards the 140-character limit.

While Twitter declined to comment when The Verge reached out, two sources close with the company revealed these features and rollout date to the publication, noting that things could change before then.

Back in May, when the reports first surfaced, The Verge spoke with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey about the new changes. “This is the most notable change we’ve made in recent times around conversation in particular, and around giving people the full expressiveness of the 140 characters,” he said. “I’m excited to see even more dialog because of this.”

We are too, Jack. We are too.

What do you think of the new changes? Do you think the date of September 19th will hold? Stay tuned to find out.

Twitter Suspends 235,000 Accounts Linked To Terrorism

By Posted on 0 1 m read

With intentions to keep their platform safe and to demote any dangerous behavior, Twitter has suspended roughly 235,000 accounts that either promoted or were linked to terrorism or terrorist activity.

“The world has witnessed a further wave of deadly, abhorrent terror attacks across the globe,” Twitter said in a statement. “We strongly condemn these acts and remain committed to eliminating the promotion of violence or terrorism on our platform.”

This isn’t the first time Twitter suspended accounts for similar behavior. Back in February, they began this same initiative and suspended roughly 125,000 accounts, according to the NY Times. That would bring the grand total to about 360,000 suspended accounts in just six months.

One thing Twitter’s always prided themselves on is the use of free speech, referring to their space as a “global town square.” Unfortunately, that stance will bring in bullies, racists and extremist groups, who just like others, are trying to get their message across. Only problem is their message is dangerous.

“We will continue to invest in both technology and other resources in the future and you can expect us to update our progress regularly,” Twitter added. I guess this isn’t the end of the suspension.

What do you make of this whole ordeal? Does Twitter have a responsibility to demote violence and terror, or does free-speech override? Tell us your thoughts below.

Viacom and Twitter Are Changing The Way You Watch The VMA’s

By Posted on 0 1 m read

Viacom and social media giant, Twitter, joined forces today to bring to life a new marketing campaign launching during the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.

As the latest member of Twitter Amplify, Viacom will bring you real-time, sponsor-supported highlights of the show’s most outrageous moments, buzzworthy performances, backstage access, interviews and more via Twitter.

“Twitter Amplify will allow Viacom to connect people across screens, and tap into the social conversation on Twitter with complimentary TV video clips across all devices.” said Adam Bain, President of Global Revenue at Twitter.

This could be a great move for both parties involved, especially for those Miguel Adorn moments when you aren’t home to see why everyone is talking about Miguel drop kicking some girl at an awards show, but do you think the advertising aspect will take away from the “purity” of Twitter in the way people complain about having to watch ads before certain videos on YouTube? Sound off in the comments!

Keri Hilson Has A Twitter Breakdown!

By Posted on 70 2 m read

It’s no secret that Beyoncé fans have had it out for Keri Hilson, after theTurnin’ Me On songstress repeatedly served up several disses towards Queen Bey over the years!

Well now it seems like all the hate hurled at Keri by Sasha Fierce stans has caused her to flip the EFF out on Twitter!

It all started with just one tweet that Ms. Hilson sent out last night, reading:

Bey fans automatically took that as an all-out diss towards their girl and fired off insults at her and her music career!

Things took a turn for the worse, when Keri realized she’s had ENOUGH of the dramz, tweeting:

Oh! But that’s not all…

Then, she seemed to be just asking to be torn apart by the BeyHive, by writing:

Of course you can only imagine what responses she got after that one… OUCH!

Keri ended her Twitter venting sesh by insisting that she’s “at peace, fine, truly happy, grateful” and ready to step back onto the music scene!

Whether her tweets did more harm than good, we’ll just have to see!

Even if Beyoncé’s fans aren’t ready to forgive and forget, it surely sounds like Keri is ready to move on!

Frank MacArthur Holds 5-Hour Standoff with BMore Police

By Posted on 69 2 m read

This past Saturday while I was enjoying my Ciroc Red Berry and cranberry juice, much like many of you, a prominent social activist was engaged in a 5-hour police standoff from his home in Baltimore, Maryland. Baltimore police and SWAT surrounded Frank James MacArthur while he remained in his home live-tweeting and broadcasting his exchange with the police negotiator for the world to witness. Not much is known about the circumstances surrounding his arrest but here’s what we do know.

First, the reason for the police presence was apparently to serve a warrant for a missed parole violation court date, stemming from a gun possession charge in 2009. MacArthur claims there was no notification for the court date, rather that he found out from an anonymous tip he received from a listener somehow connected to the Baltimore Police Department.

Second, police Lieutenant and negotiator Jason Yerg, referenced tweets from MacArthur’s twitter account where he’d mentioned violence toward the police that were serving him the warrant, hence the need for SWAT assistance. To this MacArthur’s tone and method of conversation changed notably from that of one logical and articulate commentator, to being elusive, ambiguous and calling attention to his 1st Amendment right to freedom of speech. MacArthur then went on to inform the lieutenant of a prior case where an attorney had attempted using MacArthur’s own tweets against him but received a thorough reprimanding from the presiding judge.

Finally, while remaining peaceful throughout the duration of the conversation, MacArthur intentionally timed his surrender to make live news coverage at 11pm to get as much media attention as possible, in addition to his own international feed, his purpose being to ensure he “had a chance at a fair judicial process once taken into custody”.

After listening to the near two hour exchange I have to say that the demeanor of both MacArthur, and the lieutenant who handled the situation, was that of two people who at least respected each other. I don’t know why I found this so surprising, maybe because of what we see in the movies, but I don’t think this is the norm either. At any rate, the internet and the power of social media was made evident, as many have reached out in support of Frank James MacArthur¸ and with concern for his safety. As I mentioned, not much is currently known about the surrounding circumstances, but something says this won’t be the last you hear of this. Hopefully this will provide enough background for our readers to take an interest as the story develops.
