Black History Month Appreciation (Day 28): Kerry Washington

By Posted on 0 2 m read

It’s been an incredible #LiveCivilBHM series as we’ve been able to honor tons of iconic figures in music, sports, and much more. But, as this year’s Black History Month comes to an end, we’re acknowledging and thanking Kerry Washington for her contribution to society.

The 39-year-old is not only an amazing actress who refuses to let societal norms dim her light in any way, but she’s an intellectual fashion and role model who handles life with such style and grace.

For several years, the Bronx native has been working to end domestic violence. Last year, she revealed the Purple Purse Campaign to raise awareness towards the cause, as Kerry helped designed the purse to give women the necessary resources to fight against the hard-hitting issue.

The actress also became the first African-American in nearly 40 years to earn a nomination in a lead series during the Primetime Emmy Awards, and although she lost, her moment alongside Diahann Carroll was one for the history books. Having both icons standing in unity side by side was a historical moment and shed light on the lack of diversity in Hollywood.

Aside from rising to reach the top, Dr. Washington is pure beauty and brains. In 2013, the Scandal hit-star received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Fine Arts and delivered an insightful, motivational speech at her alma mater George Washington University, where she dropped some serious words of wisdom.

Thank you, Kerry Washington, for always being an inspiration to women everywhere and standing up for what you believe in. Happy Black History Month, and stay tuned for the last installment of our #LiveCivilBHM series tomorrow.
