There aren’t many who have accomplished more in music than Russell Simmons. The man, who many consider the Uncle of hip-hop, created the most legendary imprint of all-time and is continuing to make waves curator for culture. That’s why we’ve chosen him for day 10 of our #LiveCivilBHM series.
Russell became a titan during the 80s, with the launch of Def Jam in 1983 alongside Rick Rubin. Def Jam sparked a place for artist like LL Cool J, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and more to continue to build on the foundation of hip-hop. Efforts for the young mogul continued to flourish with ventures into other forms of entertainment with Def Comedy Jam, Def Poetry Jam and his most recent work in All Def Digital.
Continuing to build his brand and to give to those who were influenced by his efforts, Simmons took a leap into fashion with the insanely popular Phat Farm of the 1990s and followed up with a second venture in ArgyleCulture.
In addition to his efforts in business, Simmons makes sure to provide a positive influence on others through tools, books and plans to a better and healthier lifestyle.
All appreciation and praise is due to Russell Simmons who to this day is a pillar of our culture and continues to display positivity within his entrepreneurial spirit. Happy Black History Month.
