A Crash Course on Black Culture: Don’t Cash Crop on My Cornrows

By Posted on 1 1 m read

We are a nation that is very rich in a wide array of cultures. However, it is sometimes extremely hard to understand a culture that you’re not apart. We may often make the mistake of actually insulting a culture when we are not aware of its vast history and progress.

Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg, 16, decided to clear some things up. In a recent video posted to her Tumblr account, Stenbery gives the world, “Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows- a crash discourse on black culture.”

In the video above, Stenberg gives a detailed lesson on the history of cornrows and their role in the media we consume daily. She explains, “By 2013 the fashion world had adopted cornrows as well. Cornrows and braids were seen on high fashion runways on brands like Marchesa and Alexander McQueen and magazine had editorial campaigns featuring cornrows as a “new urban hair style.”

For many of us, we know there is nothing new about cornrows or braids and for a history class she has made it her mission to inform the world. Check out the video above and get a much needed crash course on black culture and how braids and cornrows have evolved over the years.
