Gift giving holidays have always been a breeze for me. There’s a sense of joy that I find when shopping for the people I love and seeing their reaction when I present them with their gift is priceless. I’ve always considered myself a great gift giver, so you can imagine my frustration of the last few years struggling to come up with the perfect gift ideas. And with Mother’s Day roughly two weeks away (May 12), there’s not a lot of time to decide on a gift for my favorite girl. After all, there’s is only but so many handbags and bottles of J’Adore perfume that I can buy, right?

I would imagine that since you’re reading this post, you’re probably looking for Mother’s Day gift ideas as well. I can tell you that while it wasn’t easy, the search was well worth it. Pharrell Partners With Verizon To Launch Music Education Program

Pharrell is giving back to his hometown of Virginia Beach in a major way. In addition to bringing the highly anticipated Something In The Water music festival to the coastal city, the songwriter and record producer has reportedly partnered with Verizon to launch a new music education program in nationwide Verizon Innovative Learning schools, according to Billboard.

Launched under the Verizon Foundation, the organization will provide free technology, internet access, technology-focused curriculum to under-resourced middle schools. The partnership also includes the building of a Verizon Innovative Learning Lab, which will feature cutting-edge technology such as augmented reality, virtual reality, robotics, and machine learning. The lab will be located in a middle school in Virginia Beach.

“I want all children to have access to that kind of creative growth, access, and support. All kids, not just my own,” Pharrell tells Billboard. “There’s a lot of variables in a situation as to why something falls apart, but there’s only one scenario where it holds together, and that’s when all the variables are there. The environment, the family, the school, the system — there’s so many things. We just want to do what we can to balance the odds so that as many kids as we can afford, or help and assist in whatever ways, get this access and support.”

Pharrell’s Something In the Water festival kicked off last night in Virginia Beach. The event will be going on all weekend long with performances by Chris Brown, Travis Scott, Sza, Pusha T, Jhene Aiko, and many more.

Tiff McFierce was once again this years official music curator for BeautyCon NY, and their first ever music curator for 2018! Soundtracking tunes for top brands and venues as a sought after DJ and music coordinator, Tiff McFierce is also the first woman and first black woman to be resident DJ for the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. From years of curating  her own events and parties all over the country Tiff also created her wellness series, Look IN vs Lookin’ is a safe space of music, movement and meditation for women of color to make sure they’re taking care of self everyday.

I’m really really big on music, movement, meditation and understanding that my gift from God is a gift and its a medium. But my purpose as a healer, is to heal myself. So I create spaces with my peers of humans, where we can just get together and do a movement like Yoga or Dance.

Symone Sanders Hired As Senior Adviser To Joe Biden’s New Presidential Campaign

After announcing his decision on Thursday to run for president in the 2020 election, it has also been announced that Joe Biden has hired 29-year-old African American political strategist Symone Sanders as a senior adviser to his presidential campaign. The move adds a younger, diverse voice to Biden’s cadre of top advisers, which has been dominated by older white men. It suggests Biden is seeking to broaden his appeal to a new generation of Democrats.

Symone Sanders became a high-profile political strategist and CNN contributor after she served as press secretary for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2016. Describing Biden’s decision to bring Symone aboard as “one of the best moves” his campaign could make is Democratic strategist and former Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile.

“She understands how to build a coalition, and that women of color are the backbone of the Democratic Party,” said Brazile. She adds that Sanders also helped her bridge the gap with millennials after the contentious 2016 primary elections.

Sanders has been heavily recruited by 2020 contenders, including Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, California Sen. Kamala Harris, and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker. Bernie Sanders notably did not ask her to come back after working on his 2016 campaign.

Biden, who formally joined the race on Thursday, began aggressively recruiting Sanders about a month ago. At Biden’s invitation, the two recently sat down at his home in Virginia and spoke for a few hours. A Biden campaign official confirmed Sanders’ hire on condition of anonymity because it has not been formally announced. Another person described their meeting in Virginia and insisted on anonymity to discuss a private meeting.

Sylvia Rhone Named Chairman & CEO of Epic Records

Music industry executive Sylvia Rhone has been promoted to chairman and CEO of Epic Records. The announcement was made today by Sony Music Entertainment. In her new role, Rhone will lead the creative direction and management of Epic, home to artists including Camila Cabello, Travis Scott, Future, 21 Savage, Meghan Trainor, DJ Khaled, and French Montana.

Sony Music CEO Rob Stringer, who Rhone will continue to report to, describes her as a “trailblazing and iconic executive who has played a critical leadership role in driving Epic’s recent artist development success. Her wealth of experience and passionate support of artistic vision will help us further grow the reach of Epic’s roster around the world.”

Sylvia Rhone has served as President of Epic Records since 2014. According to Billboard, Rhone has overseen the release of projects for artists such as Future, 21 Savage, Travis Scott, and more. Prior to joining Sony, Sylvia Rhone spent eight years as the President of Universal Motown Records and Executive Vice President at Universal Records. She was the first African American woman to be named the chairman of a major record company, working as the Chairman and CEO of Warner Music Group’s Elektra Entertainment Group from 1994-2004.

Nielsen Report Paints Black Women As Trendsetters, Brand Loyalists, & Early Adopters Who Care About Projecting Positive Image

Knowing how far we’ve come and how much we’ve blossomed, it’s no surprise that the “African American Women: Our Science, Her Magic” report paints black women as trendsetters, brand loyalists and early adopters who care about projecting a positive image. According to the 2017 Diverse Intelligence Series report, which was global performance management company Nielsen’s seventh look at African-American consumers and the second time they’ve zeroed in on black women, black women’s consumer preferences and brand affinities are resonating across the U.S. mainstream, driving total Black spending power toward a record $1.5 trillion by 2021. At 24.3 million strong, Black women account for 14% of all U.S. women and 52% of all African-Americans, the article says.

“Black women have strong life-affirming values that spill over into everything they do. The celebration of their power and beauty is reflected in what they buy, watch and listen to, and people outside their communities find it inspiring,” says Cheryl Grace, Senior Vice President of U.S. Strategic Community Alliances and Consumer Engagement, Nielsen.“Understanding how Black women’s values affect their buying decisions has long been a marketing necessity. Now, marketers must also recognize the intercultural influence of Black women on the general market as an increasingly vital part of how all women see themselves, their families and the rest of the world.”

In a 2018 article, Nielsen also examined digital habits and the impact of black consumers stating that black influence on the economy and pop culture has been intensified by participation in the digital universe and adoption of social media and technology platforms. African Americans are leaning into digital know-how and open-source innovation — with unprecedented impact on brands, elections and what the country watches, buys and listens to.

“African Americans are leveraging innovations in technology and the anonymity of social platforms to level the playing field and get ahead in a marketplace unencumbered by corporate scrutiny,” said Grace. “African American influence has long resonated cross-culturally, and now it’s being delivered directly from creator to consumer. Give talented, creative people unobstructed access to the world stage and, inevitably, they will shine.”

Hennessy Partners With Thurgood Marshall College Fund To Create Fellowship For HBCU Graduate Students

Hennessy’s new partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is being called a major game-changer. The two have joined forces to create a fellowship for HBCU graduate students.

What is being called the Hennessy Fellows Program is an initiative that will award scholarships and professional development resources to ten deserving graduate students. The premium cognac brand has made a commitment to support future African American leaders by donating $10 million over the next 10 years to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Recipients will be awarded financial assistance towards collegiate graduate level education programs, as well as curated corporate development experiences, including training forums and networking to enhance the exchange of ideas and provide direct exposure to the inter-relatedness of corporate, social and economic systems.

“We are honored to announce a ten-year partnership with Thurgood Marshall College Fund,” said Jim Clerkin, President and CEO of Moët Hennessy North America. “As a charter corporate sponsor of the fund, we continue to support the work of this organization in developing a pipeline of talent and future leaders from historically Black colleges and universities. I am proud of the work we have done together to date and look forward to continuing our efforts to build a broader, more inclusive talent base for corporate America.”

According to Blavity, the program will also look to help students who are often overlooked by financial aid programs.

“The issue of financial aid is not only limited to undergraduate students on our HBCU campuses. Limited resources for graduate students also lead to student drop off,” said Dr. David Wilson, President of Morgan State University, one of the schools participating in the program. “Hennessy’s initiative will be a lifeline of support providing more opportunities for graduate students that are often forgotten.”

I recently read an article published on Teen Vogue about popular beauty influencer Jackie Aina speaking on the lack of nude makeup available to dark-skinned women. In the video titled “Trying Nude Makeup… But What IS Nude?!,” Aina demonstrated, with a variety of swatches, just how exclusive makeup can be to women of darker skin tones as every product that she tried ended up coming back to the same beige, peachy or light color that we all know as nude. I totally agree with the sentiment of writer Scarlett Newman of Teen Vogue when she says “we like to think of makeup as one size fits all, but there are still areas where brands aren’t considering the needs of their consumers with darker skin.”

#CivilChat: Jason Bolden Talks Integrity, Being a Stylist, Working with Taraji P Henson, & More

For those who may not know, Jason Bolden is the stylist behind some of the most iconic looks seen on some of your favorite Hollywood entertainers. His ever growing clientele includes ‘Empire’ actress Taraji P Henson, ‘Grown•ish’ actress and activist Yara Shahidi,  professional tennis player Serena Williams, actress and singer Venessa Hudgens and we’re just getting started.


“I’m Jason Bolden. I am a creative director. Most people know me as working with some of the most culture shifting men and women in the arts. I come from really humble beginnings, in the Midwest of Missouri. And coming from the Midwest, this is one career that your parents probably don’t want you to do — being a physician, attorney, engineer, or teacher is the safe and easy way to go. So, I took a risk and left St. Louis right after high school. I moved to Chicago and attended college. I decided that what I wanted to go to school for was not really what I loved. And I found myself, following my intuition. I placed myself in luxury retail, where I respect what’s the closest thing that I could get to fashion.

A lot of what I do right now, probably still today never existed.

I went through the classic stage of just being a person of color, on the planet and now I’m kind of at the forefront of it. I’ve been recognized by The Hollywood Reporter, Business of Fashion (BoF), Vogue, and other stylists and individuals with creative or really strong creative sense. So, my journey now is pretty interesting.

I come from a place where I watch how chic and effortless my grandmother was and how sensible and creative my mother was when it came to furniture and being able to manipulate how how it looks during the winter or summer time. So I’ve always had those sensibilities. Those two iconic women in my life just kind of lead into the iconic women I work with now — Ava DuVernay, Yara Shahidi, Amy Cheryl, Taraji P Henson, and the list goes on and on. Serena Williams.


I think what it was, was my gut. And my confidence; my voice. I manifested and believed in what I really felt was true and I knew I could be that. Its like the idea of “everything that on the planet is for you.” So I just always thought subconsciously, that I was already living my life that way.

A lot of it was also immature ego. I believed that I could conquer things, but now looking back, that’s exactly how I constantly try to think; minus the ego. When it comes to my work ethic, It’s always been the same. I think that’s why my career constantly keeps moving — because it just gets stronger and louder. Its just now, I’m just in front of people who actually see it. We have social media, so now people can actually be exposed to the work you put in.

Creating outstanding looks for usual clients was never a problem for Bolden. Each look stems from a client conversation that inspires the look for each occasion.

Being able to involve people and get new points of view should come through conversation. Conversations that I have with Yara, conversations that I have with Taraji, Sasha Blane are all different. Ryan Coogler. It’s pure conversation and it ignites something within me to dig deeper and look into what’s happening on the planet.

I just left Paris and being able to see what Valentino did at the couture shows was eye opening. The show was loaded with women of color that looked like people that I work with. That’s inspiration to me. And that kind of takes me to a space to look at archival things. Like what Johnson Publications did with Ebony and Jet like; it’s allowing me push my knowledge and study a bit more.

A lot of people think its just about the beautiful clothes but you also have to think about what will translate the appropriate way for your clients. Like I can’t put the same thing on Serena Williams that I put on Yara Shahidi. I can’t put the same things that I put on Ava DuVernay on Taraji P Henson. So it’s a bit more.

It’s a bit more if you come to really think about it and it becomes very personal in things that you feel will truly resonate with a person.

For me it’s all a bonus to that to work with those beautiful humans.


I am a firm believer in a vision board and I put a lot of these people on my board. I really believe in manifestation and the fact that is no one can deny talent. For a really long time in the fashion business, people of color have been denied because we had no real access. We had no real visual space, but now with social media, you have the visual space and cannot deny what the work is. I’ve been able to garner clients just through social media.


I love love love substance. I love confidence. I love an outgoing and outstanding voice and I think that’s what it is. When you look at my list my roster of guys and girls they all speak the same language. At the end of the day, it’s you that everybody is fighting for, human rights and rights [just trying to not avoid the uncomfortable conversation that is].

I’ve been lucky enough to work with people who actually understand that and actually want to do something with their platform. I’ve been lucky in that sense. Like all my people pretty much know how to speak the big black language — it’s about shifting the culture.

Putting people at the front who have always deserve the same opportunity.


I’m a bit different than most stylist. I normally dream of something and when I wake up, I have an idea. Then, I literally just start digging for content that matches; and present it to my client. I don’t normally go shopping with them because they’re also very busy and they’ve entrusted this part of their lives to me, which I’m happy about.

I’m lucky enough to present things to them and they luckily, over the years been enjoying it.


My day to day schedule is mayhem! I wake up in the morning and start responding to emails. I speak with my assistant and virtually go from showroom to showroom. It’s literally mayhem.


Integrity. No matter what, I think that’s the focus for my life. All the other things will fall in line. After the style and glamour your baseline should be integrity.


The city that I feel has the best style is the city I grew up in. I grew up in a space that was super underground, total hipster and a blend of punk. But it was also everything that was like super expensive; like shopping at Neiman Marcus or SAKS and seeing that kind of stuff. So it was it was definitely a range of that.


I say remove all ego and listen. No ego.

Stick to your integrity. Don’t pay attention to what anybody is up to.

My husband tells me all the time but, I can’t remember. It goes, don’t base your life on applause, because once the applause stop. Thats it. Just do the work for the work’s sake.


Oh my God. I just had to create a look for the Golden Globes! Taraji got her dress the day before the awards. The fit was a custom Vera Wang dress and it was literally just made. She flew in at four o’clock in the afternoon. And yes that is the story of my life.



Well working working with Taraji — Taraji is my OG client, she’s the one who I would pretty much say jump started my current career. I love her. Yara is my baby, the voice of the future. When I talk about integrity. Yara is bad! But the bonus is everybody is lovely and amazing.

You know what it is. I love what I do and I’m really confident in what I do. So you know I actually I love it.







Oprah Winfrey & Prince Harry Team Up For New Documentary Series On Mental Health

On Wednesday (April 10), it was announced that a new documentary series headed to Apple in 2020. Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry are teaming up to launch an untitled project set to focus on mental health issues. The pair will serve as co-creators and executive producers.

The dynamic multi-part documentary series will focus on both mental illness and mental wellness, inspiring viewers to have an honest conversation about the challenges each of us faces, and how to equip ourselves with the tools to not simply survive, but to thrive, according to the Sussex Royal Instagram page.

“I truly believe that good mental health – mental fitness – is the key to powerful leadership, productive communities, and a purpose-driven self,” Prince Harry said in a news release. “It is a huge responsibility to get this right as we bring you the facts, the science and the awareness of a subject that is so relevant during these times. Our hope is that this series will be positive, enlightening and inclusive – sharing global stories of unparalleled human spirit fighting back from the darkest places, and the opportunity for us to understand ourselves and those around us better. I am incredibly proud to be working alongside Oprah on this vital series which we have been developing together for several months.”

The Philadelphia 76ers has welcomed their first female assistant coach to the team, according to The announcement was made on Monday (April 8) that the WNBA’s 2007 No. 1 overall draft pick Lindsey Harding has been promoted from pro scout to player development coach, making her the NBA’s seventh female assistant coach.

In 2018 the 34-year-old started working with the NBA’s Basketball Operations Associate Program in hopes of getting her foot in the door. Harding says she was looking for on-court coaching opportunities, other front-office opportunities, and other scouting opportunities. Urging her to pursue a career with the league was Becky Hammon, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach, who San Antonio Spurs Assistant Coach.

“I played against Becky for years,” Harding told ESPN. “During this last season, especially working in the front office [program] and going to games, I spent some time talking to her. She was always telling me, ‘You need to come. You need to come. We need more women here.’”

In addition to playing in the league overseas, Lindsey Harding also served as an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors in the 2015 summer league.

“Lindsey has quickly become one of the game’s bright young minds in basketball operations,” says Philadelphia 76ers head coach Brett Brown. “Lindsey is applying the same grit and basketball IQ she used as a player in her move to the front office. We look forward to the work Lindsey will do to help grow our program and further solidify a culture of winning.”

Oprah Winfrey Donates $2 Million To Puerto Rico For Disaster Relief

The island of Puerto Rico has received a major donation from Oprah Winfrey. The philanthropist and media mogul has made a $2 million contribution towards Puerto Rico’s disaster relief efforts. The island is still recovering from two back-to-back hurricanes that hit in 2017.

According to the Huffington Post, Winfrey’s donation was announced on Monday (April 8) by the Hispanic Federation and the Flamboyan Arts Fund. Both were founded last year by Lin-Manuel Miranda, a Tony Award-winning actor and Hamilton creator. Miranda’s parents were born in Puerto Rico and he also visits his grandparents there.

After visiting San Juan last year and attending the production of Hamilton, Oprah Winfrey decided to donate $1 million to each organization for revitalization projects.

“I was so moved by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s commitment to bring ‘Hamilton’ to Puerto Rico and support the community that served him growing up that I wanted to join in the revitalization efforts of an island so rich in culture, beauty, and heritage,” Winfrey said in a statement. “The needs of Puerto Rico and our fellow American citizens following the tragic hurricanes are still very real.”

In the midst of trying to rebuild and restore what was left behind by the 2017 hurricanes, Lin-Manuel also took to Twitter to correct the misinformed President Donald Trump who continuously bashed Puerto Rico for seeking resources to recover from the hurricanes. Trump stated that Puerto Rico received $91 billion for disaster relief while “all of their local politicians do is complain and ask for more money.” Lin-Manuel corrected Trump stating that $91 billion was the estimated damage and that Puerto Rico is still waiting for most of their allocated relief funds.
