After earning $37 million last year, 22 year-old Naomi Osaka becomes the highest earning female athlete in history. According to Forbes, the Japanese-Haitian tennis player has earned a total of $37.4 million from prize money and endorsements between June 2019 and May 2020, placing her at No. 29 on Forbes Top 100 highest-paid athletes list.
Through a combination of prize money and endorsements, Osaka ranked in $1.4 million more than Serena Williams over the last 12 months who currently sits at No. 33. Williams, who had been the highest-paid female athlete for the last four years amassed an earning between $18 million and $29 million.
Osaka has won 2 Grand Slams in her career so far, and now has 15 endorsement partners and a new Nike contract which doesn’t require her to play matches in full Nike apparel. Osaka now has broken Maria Sharapova’s previous record for a female athlete which was set back in 2015 when Sharapova earned $29.7 million.
